1. Physical and spiritual death make it possible for us to continue progressing by helping us to recognize our weaknesses. If we were given a perfect body right at the get go, our rate of progression would have been significantly dampened. Our Heavenly Father knows each of us perfectly. Since He knows each of us perfectly, He knows each of our weaknesses perfectly and how to help us make them stronger. Being able to physically die gives our mortal minds a sense of urgency. We are only here for a limited amount of time so we must make the most of it. I think of the quote from a little while ago that said, “as man is now, God once was. As God is now, man may become.” Our Heavenly Father very well could’ve gone through a mortal experience much like our own, so He understands that all the hardships that are brought upon by physical death are for our own good. The great plan of happiness has been laid out, and physical death is just another step for our eternal happiness. It’s the hardships in the journey that make the end goal worth it. Life is hard, but it’s for our benefit. 2. Our natural inclination is to be a “natural man.” Independent living allows us to have a broader range of agency. If we were to live our lives with God hovering over us 24/7, then it would be easy to make the right choice. In one of the videos, it was compared to a dad with a rolling pin watching a plate of cookies and telling their child not to eat them. That’s kind of a scary comparison. We should have to develop our own “God fearing” love and not because we might get it beat into us. The natural man is an enemy to God. It is because of this “natural” behavior that provides us with further agency. We can choose to forego those natural desires and turn to God. We might not see the immediate results like we might hope, but there are countless blessings in store for those who put in that effort. God has given us the rubric for living the happiest life possible. Being able to
independently live that lifestyle is one of the greatest blessings. That in and of itself is a tremendous blessing. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to choose right or wrong and to bear the consequences from it. 3. Without trials, we simply cannot grow. I like to compare it to a child reaching to touch a hot pan. The parent might tell the child not to touch a hot pan, but whether that child listens is totally up to them. If they choose to obey the words of the parent, then they will avoid a lot of pain and consequence. If they don’t obey, then we would hope that they would learn from that and never do it again. Our Heavenly father is the same way. He has all knowledge and has instructed us on what the “hot pans” are around us. We can choose to obey His words, or we can ignore them. He doesn’t take the hot pans out of our lives, but He does tell us what to watch out for. Regardless, our trials allow us to grow. Our divine destiny is built upon our desire to be a more perfect being. If we wish to progress at a faster rate, we must adhere to the commandments set forth by Him. Our agency helps us in that process of becoming godly. Our agency helps us to grow our spirits.
