1 Module 6 Assignment: Health Care Policy Report prepared by: Evony Jackson Date: October 15 th , 2023 Walden University WMBA 6604: Law, Ethics, and Policy in Healthcare Administration
2 Policymaking From Different Perspectives – Social Due to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, each state has the authority to independently decide the regulations regarding abortion laws for their specific state. Georgia forbids abortion after an unborn baby has a heartbeat except to save the mother’s life or to prevent substantial impairment. Studies have shown that women in poor countries with low socioeconomic resources are more likely exposed to unsafe induced abortion compared to women with high socioeconomic resources in developing countries or women living in countries where there is a liberalized access to abortion (Ouédraogo & Sundby, 2014). This is now what America has reverted to, the most developed country, the leader of the free world, has regressed to the same levels that other developing countries wished to be. Access to abortion is fundamental to the health of individuals, families, and communities and is a public health issue. Despite its demonstrated safety record, abortion is extensively regulated and restricted. Restrictions on access to abortion care cause significant harm, especially to marginalized and vulnerable populations (LA County Department of Public Health, n.d.) . Forcing these women to deliver babies, against their will, will cause many socioeconomical issues. Hearing the word abortion can bring forth a plethora of emotions based on individuals’ perspectives, religions, and societal beliefs. According to the previously mentioned, when one hears a women known to have sought or those seeking abortion services experience stigma and social exclusion within their communities. Understanding community perception of abortion is critical in informing the design and delivery of interventions that reduce the gaps in access to safe abortion for women (Ushie et al., 2019). Now, with the recent government changes, we have decreased the opportunity greatly for safe and effective care, forcing the hand of these women. Policymaking From Different Perspectives – Economic Everyone should have a fair opportunity to be as healthy as possible no matter who they are, where they live, or what they have. Together, social factors that influence our health (income, education, social connections, and housing) are estimated to account for up to 40% of what keeps us healthy (Lambton Public Health, n.d.). Vulnerable populations, who are already experiencing financial issues, can potentially sink deeper into debt. It can also deter teens from finishing high school due to unplanned pregnancies and/or young adults from obtaining their degree in college. It can also force individuals to take fast food or waitress jobs due to not finishing school.
3 Housman (2022) finds that denying these women an abortion creates economic hardship, insecurities that lasts for years in comparison with women who obtained their desired abortion. She continues to convey those women denied the abortion had lowered credit scores as well as increased debt, bankruptcies, and evictions. They were also more likely to stay in contact with a violent partner. The financial well-being and development of prior and subsequent children was also negatively impacted. Finally, giving birth was connected to more serious long-term health problems than having an abortion. This decision has a greater impact on the low-income, young, black women. Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Wealthier and whiter people have more resources, greater connections to the health care system. So they can leave the state to access abortion,” Elizabeth Nash said, a state policy analyst (Christensen & Sneed, 2022). Policymaking From Different Perspectives – Business The ceasing of legal abortions is also causing closures of Planned parenthoods in said states that have banned abortions. Dozens of clinics have close d or halted abortions since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. In the year since Roe fell, 20 states enacted laws banning or restricting abortion , forcing a rapid shift in the country’s patchwork of abortion access. Clinic owners scrambled to adjust, canceling appointments, and helping patients travel elsewhere (McCann & Walker, 2023). This inconsiderate decision has caused life altering decisions for hundreds, maybe thousands, of women, and they have no say so in their own futures. Many clinic owners said they could not afford to stay open without providing abortions. Numerous providers have chosen to leave their homes and their states to open new practices and clinics elsewhere. A handful of the buildings, including the clinic at the center of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the case that overturned Roe, were sold and turned into something else (McCann & Walker, 2023). This decision has affected so many women, their families and other children, physicians and their families, their finances, all the nurses, techs, environmental services employees who are all out of jobs, the contractors who supply the durable medical equipment and supplies, the shredding company who picks up the confidential material. Policymaking From Different Perspectives – Cultural

4 There are over 4,000 different religions, faiths groups, and denominations that exist around the world today (World Religion Day, 2023). Each religion has different beliefs, different Gods or beings, morals, ethics, and religious laws. As a united nation, every year on the third Sunday in January, we recognize and celebrate all the different religions of the world. Taking this into consideration, how is it we respect one’s culture and their religious beliefs, but do not respect a woman’s decision in our own country. Studies have shown that community stigma toward abortion arises as a result of cultural norms, including religious and gender norms. Religiosity, in particular, has been shown to be associated with higher abortion stigma (Chandrasekaran, et al., 2023). The way a woman was raised, and even the relationships between mothers and daughters, and their cultural upbringing will all play a critical role in the perceptions of all individuals. Participants often described an internal struggle to balance traditional family views, expectations, and strong religious influence with “western” ideals (Chandrasekaran, et al., 2023). Due to their upbringings some women hide the decision to get an abortion from their parents but are still able to receive safe and effective care, but those who hide this decision from their parents and obtain the abortion illegally are putting their health and lives in jeopardy.
