Identify any personal biases that you may hold concerning these topics. (2pts each box) 1. Nationality Nationality is where a person was born and holds citizenship. I disagree with the fact that nationality sometimes impacts patient care. I feel as though everyone should receive healthcare despite their citizenship. 2. Race Race is a group of people who the same physical characteristics. I do feel that racism does have an impact on healthcare and the quality of healthcare one may receive because of their race. 3. Culture Culture is the general customs, norms, values, and beliefs held by a group of people. I think that learning about different cultures is very interesting. There are so many different cultures throughout the world. As a healthcare professional, it is important to learn and understand the various cultures because healthcare practices can vary greatly amongst them. 4. Ethnicity Ethnicity is common culture, religion, traditions, nationality, and language shared by a group of people. For a while, I got ethnicity and race confused. I thought they were the same. After reviewing both definitions, race is for physical traits while ethnicity is cultural identification. 5. Social factors Social factors are the ways individuals are different from each other. The textbook stated how a person’s lifestyle choices might influence clinical decisions and treatments for conditions. I do agree with that statement as I’ve seen some of my family members experience issues that could be resolved if they complied with orders from physicians, but they ultimately decided not to due to some of the choices they were making at the time.
Medical Law, Ethics & Professionalism 31-509-309 Name: Ceaira Cole How would you demonstrate respect for individual diversity, incorporating awareness of one’s own biases. (3pts) As a healthcare professional, I will always need to show respect no matter my own beliefs and biases I may have. I would do this by treating others as I would want to be treated. This includes being positive and smiling, courteous, welcoming, professional, and maintaining a calm tone.
