Discussion Thread: Modern Educational Trends
Constructivism is the idea of students build their own understanding rather than just passively taking in information. As people experience life, they develop knowledge and understanding and add it to the knowledge that they
already have. Students have prior knowledge from past experiences and they bring that into the classroom. Their prior knowledge influences the way they learn in and out of the classroom. The philosophy of constructivism is all
knowledge is gained from human experience over time. "Constructivism philosophy is based on cognitive psychology and its background relates to Socratic method, Ancient Greece" (Constructivism research philosophy - research-methodology). Implementing constructivism in the classroom could look like figuring out what students already know and then go off of that in discussion and classwork if possible. Creating discussion based off of student's prior knowledge, could create conversation where students are really engaged and could further their learning. The constructivism theory conflicts with Christian teachings. Constructivism supports that there is no single perspective of reality and your reality changes based off of experiences. This theory believes that whatever decisions are made will change the path you are supposed to go down, whereas for Christianity, no matter what decisions you make does not affect the plan God has for you and your life. Christianity believes
that God has created all of existence with a purpose. There is one reality and
God has everything already planned out even with allowing us to have free will. Our reality is significant and purposeful just for us and our needs. With all of these new modern educational trends we as Christians need to be careful on how we use them in our classrooms. We need to do our best to show Gods plan for each and every one of our students but also not let it take away from learning and their imagination. It can be a challenge to be a Christian and a teacher with certain things that keep popping up but if we can teach our students to look for God for understanding and not lean on our
own understanding that can be a key to helping them in their everyday lives.
