Discussion Thread: Integrating Faith and Teaching After completing this week's reading, watching the Biblical Worldview presentation and completing the first two Faith, Freedom and Public-School modules there were a few things that challenged my worldview thinking regarding teaching. One of the main things from this week's material that challenged my worldview thinking was how many veteran teachers mentioned in the video about crossing the invisible lines of faith while teaching in public school. As Christians we are called to spread the word and reach the nations but also as a teacher in a public-school setting, we have to follow the rules set in place and that can make it hard to talk about faith and making sure you are not crossing that invisible line. It is very different talking about faith in school when you look at it from a public-school setting versus a private school setting. It would be very easy for us as Christians to instantly go and be in a private Christian school because we can be open about our faith and not have to watch that invisible line like you would in public school. We as Christian's teachers need to listen and pray for God to guide us to where we need to be a teacher that would be able to serve him best. I feel like I am better equipped and have a better understand of how to follow a public school's guidelines but also be a follower of Christ. This understanding better integrates my faith into my future teaching performance in lesson design, meeting the needs of diverse students, and building community because I believe that it is important to recognize that every student is created in the image of God. As a teacher, I will strive to create a classroom environment that is inclusive and respectful of all students regardless of their background, culture, or beliefs. I think it is important to know the standard of one's state, as Eric Buehrer encouraged (gogateways.org). I will integrate my faith into my lesson design by incorporating biblical principles and values into my teaching. This can involve using the Bible to illustrate a concept, discussing moral and ethical issues from a Christian perspective, and encouraging students to reflect on how their faith can inform their academic and personal lives. Meeting the needs of diverse students requires me to understand their unique backgrounds, learning styles, and abilities. I can create a welcoming and supportive environment by taking the time to get to know my students and adapting my teaching strategies to meet their individual needs. When it
comes to building community, I will make sure my students understand what community means and how we are all apart of our community. I will foster a sense of community in my classroom by encouraging collaboration, respect, and empathy among my students. I also plan to model these values by treating my students with kindness, fairness, and compassion. Rather than assuming they will find the truth through nature in their souls or, as stated by Emerson, "we find our truth by our own introspection, contemplation, and intuition of the ideas within our minds."
