Reflective Journal Template – Topic Reflection
Topic
Debating Abortion Scenario and Reflection What are the key points of contention on this topic?
The key point of this topic is about legalizing abortion which is a very complex and common subject. Some people believe embryo to be human being and view abortion to be an act of man slaughtering whereas some believe mother’s value and right is more than a fetus, who is not viable until late second trimester. What side of the argument (stance) do you take on this topic?
My stance is with legalizing abortion. Criminalizing abortion is not a solution to stop abortion. By doing so, it will only encourage women to undergo unsafe methods for which could be fatal for women. Women have every right to chose what they want to do with their body and that is protected under right to privacy 14 amendment. It is very important for a mother to be mentally and physically ready to bring her child into this world because an unwanted child could face resentful feeling or abuse from family, after all a baby is entirely dependent on mother after they are born. What strong points does the other side of this topic have?
Here, Dr. Meadows (other side) argues about how a fetus have a potential greater future if women stop performing abortion. She believes in protecting the future of fetus by encouraging women to stop aborting their baby and letting baby live their life. She compares mother’s hard life after having unwanted baby to life of another mother who opt for abortion for example, depression. Women who opt for abortion can also suffer from abortion and guilt of losing baby just like a mother who gave birth to unwanted child. The other
side values human life and, therefore, finds abortion to be unethical. What were the three most important things you took away from the topic?
1. People should understand to protect the right of the mother before protecting the right of fetus as the life
of the fetus is entirely dependent on mother. 2. Sometimes saving a life of a younger child could contribute to greater future than an older one.
3. Mother who opt for abortion and mother who are forced to give birth, can suffer the same consequences in terms of guilt and depression. Which ethical theory (of the 6 approved ones ONLY – Kant; Act Utilitarianism; Rule Utilitarianism; Care
Ethics; Virtue Ethics; and Social Contract) would you apply to this topic to defend your stance? Explain fully. 250 words.
A)
In this reflection you must first define the key terms of the debate (for example, define what Euthanasia/Abortion/Stem Cell/Public Health/PreNatal Testing/Animal Research/Health Care, etc. means and what are the different types depending on which topic you are discussing)
B)
Define and explain the ethical theory you chose (show me you know exactly what the theory is and does – in your own words)
C)
Present the evidence both pro and con and follow up how using your ethical theory is the best way
to determine whether or not your stance is really ethical
D)
Conclusion – any final thoughts and opinions would go here
E)
2 to 3 resources as support for your evidence (text book counts as 1)

Abortion is one of the most discussed and oldest topic in medical field. It has divided people with pro-choice and pro-life and questions whether abortion should be legal in countries or not. In this video, Dr. Kathrine Williams, and Dr. Robin Meadows debate about the ethical challenges abortion holds. People who support legal abortion believes abortion to be a safe procedure that protects the life of a mother while the opponents believes that abortion is a murder as the life begins right after conception. I agree with Dr. Williams who says that protecting the right of an adult mother before the right of a fetus, whose life is dependent on the mother. A fetus, on depending on the stage of development, has not developed to the point that it can feel pain or think of itself as a being (Dr. Williams, West Coast University, 2022).However, Dr. Meadows (other side)
argues to value human life which also includes that life which starts right after conception. B)
The term “abortion” exemplifies care ethics and virtue ethics. Ethics of care, also known as care ethics, is considered as a feminist approach to ethics that acts to improve the wellbeing of a care givers, care receivers and responsible care which is morally accepted. In abortion scenario, a woman who opts to terminate their pregnancy need help and care. The care givers should be educated and trained enough to perform abortion safely. Care provider should have the confident to provide essential care to the one who is receiving care. Virtue ethics is a character base approach which is acquired by practice like being honest, generous, brave, and so on. In abortion scenario, a characteristic of a fetus is defined by its moral significance and should possess value and to achieve those characteristic one should have self-consciousness. If a mother finds her baby valuable, she will keep it, but if she finds it not valuable, she may abort it (Countryman, 2014). C)
Although a fetus is a human, it does not meet certain criteria of personhood and that since
a fetus is not a person, it does not have the right to life (Pence, 2020, p.99). The nerves of
a fetus is not developed until late second trimester, therefore, it does not feel pain, while a
mothers who are forced to give birth to her unwanted child must face many dilemmas financially, emotionally, and physically. Dr Meadows (other side) argues that she believes in protecting human life and values human life including the life of a fetus but people should also protect and value a mother’s life and situation. There are many reasons to opt for abortion, like, genetic, sexual assault, ectopic, failure of birth control method or some couple are not yet ready to become a parent.

It is very important to give right to privacy for women and provide them with safe abortion. Developing countries bear the burden if 97% of all unsafe abortions and more than half of unsafe abortions occur in Asia, most of them in south and central Asia (WHO, 2021). People must learn and understand to protect a mother, for her to protect her unborn child. References
