Introduction
This topic I chose of suicide in veterans because it’s an important issue that affects many individuals who have served our country. Raising awareness about mental health and suicide prevention is crucial. Having seen this during my time in the military and several times after serving it is a very touching subject that I do not think is talked about enough. This is such an important issue that can be worked towards prevention, ensuring that our veterans receive the care and support they deserve. Many veterans face unique challenges after leaving the military, such as difficulty transitioning to civilian life and accessing appropriate support systems. Argument from a source about challenges in Veterans
There are many challenges that Veterans face day to day. There are several key areas to consider in this subject because after serving in the military, veterans often have to adjust to a different routine, find new employment, and establish a new support system. “
Suicide is a major public health challenge that disproportionately affects service members and veterans. Researchers have been studying veteran suicide rates and prevention strategies, but there are opportunities to improve risk identification, evaluation, support, and treatments and interventions. These strategies must include community-based efforts to reach veterans outside the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs system.” (Ramchand, 2022) This argument can be summarized as follows:
Premise 1: Many veterans face significant challenges, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and a lack of support upon returning to civilian life.
Premise 2: The high rates of suicide among veterans indicate a need for increased mental health resources, accessible treatment options, and improved support system.
3
Conclusion: Therefore, addressing the mental health needs of veterans is crucial in reducing suicide rates and providing the care they deserve. Evaluation of the argument Challenges in Veterans
The argument presented highlights some of the key challenges that veterans encounter, such as the transition to civilian life, physical and mental health related issues, accessing the healthcare system they are supposed to have. These points are well supported and align with the experiences that many veterans face. “Although VA has implemented various suicide prevention
strategies, not all veterans are eligible or opt to receive care through VA. Among veterans who died by suicide in 2018, 63 percent (4,057 of 6,435) did not have an encounter with VHA in the year of their death or the year prior. However, many may have been receiving care outside of VA; among the general insured population, as many as 83 percent of those who die by suicide had a health care visit in the year before their death.” (Ahmedani, 2014)
Argument of how suicide is a complex issue The many things that relate to a veteran during their time in the military is unique, they have such a massive amount of exposure to traumatic events that takes a toll in itself. PTSD is the highest contributor to this because of the depression, anxiety, and how this increases suicidal thoughts. Factors that could decline this issue is making sure there are among mental health services in your area, reduce stigma, providing comprehensive support during the transition to civilian life. “
The crucial issue of mental health care for veterans is more important than ever before due to the considerable number of veterans returning from combat missions who have experienced episodes of PTSD and other mental health conditions.” (Philips, 2016)

Premise 1:
Suicide is a complex issue influenced by various factors, including mental health, personal circumstances, and societal pressures.
Premise 2:
While it is important to focus on supporting veterans,
it is equally crucial to address mental health issues and suicide prevention across all populations.
Conclusion:
Therefore, a comprehensive approach to suicide
prevention should prioritize accessible mental health resources for all
individuals, including veterans.
Evaluation of the argument Suicide is a complex issue. To effectively address the issue of veteran suicide, a comprehensive approach is needed. This includes improving access to mental health services, reducing stigma, providing support during the transition to civilian life, and promoting social connectedness. By recognizing and addressing the complexity of this issue, we can work towards better supporting our veterans and reducing the risk of suicide.
Mental health disorders are common and associated with substantial functional impairment, morbidity, and mortality, including increased suicide risk. Over 1.7 million Veterans received mental health treatment in the VA, and rates of suicide are
higher among Veterans than in the general population.
Conclusion
5
I have given my sources and they have valid arguments that appear to be very strong for this paper. I have gained he knowledge to not let me give up on this paper. It is very clear that suicide is a complex issue among veterans. The unique challenges they face, such as exposure to trauma, the transition to civilian life, and the limited resources to mental health and everything in
between. By recognizing and addressing these factors, this gives us a stepping stone to work towards a better future for our veterans.
