Business Ethics Touchstone 4 Name: Muriel Sime Course: Business Ethics Date: 02/06/2024 In a Canadian study of 3000 men, kindness was associated with higher incomes (Trzeciak et al., 2023). Being kind not only improves personal well-being but also leads to enhanced organizational success. Altruism, equanimity, and empathy are critical aspects that drive my passion, commitment, and interaction with colleagues, leading to organizational success. Altruism defines the selfless act of helping others without expecting reciprocity. The value is essential as it describes my commitment to giving back to the community and creates a sense of belonging. From a volunteering perspective, helping others improve my well-being is essential in exercising my perception of humanity. As an aspiring leader, my first professional goal is to develop and mentor others. Petriglieri (2014) identifies the ability to manage others’ emotions as an asset. In this regard, giving back, sharing knowledge, and being selfless, without expecting a reward will be useful in promoting and elevating others. Equanimity is the composure and calmness displayed, particularly when presented with challenging situations. In such a case, the value helps maintain control, keeping calm and ensuring objectivity. The rationale is that the loss of control may lead to rushed decisions, often
associated with poor outcomes. The value increases my self-confidence when faced with adversity. The second goal focuses on confidently navigating uncertainty. According to Arendt et al. (2019), effective leaders display composure and confidence, critical aspects related to success. In such a case, managers and leaders face numerous challenges that require equanimity to ensure success and reduce the adverse effects of rushed decision-making by remaining calm and confident. Empathy is the capacity to understand and share others’ feelings. I value the aspect as it improves my objectivity and decision-making. Being able to walk in another person’s shoes is essential in understanding their situation and making an objective and fair choice. The focus is on considering another person’s position. My third professional goal is to manage effectively through conflict. In such a case, being empathetic will be key to supporting others, avoiding selfishness, and meeting personal objectives, such as satisfaction (Trzeciak et al., 2023). Incorporating others’ opinions and considering their motivations, challenges, and other aspects will be vital in avoiding or minimizing conflict. Altruism, equanimity, and empathy are essential values guiding personal, professional, and organizational success. As illustrated, the aspects align with my professional goals, including developing and mentoring others, confidently navigating uncertainty, and managing effectively through conflict. The values improve self-satisfaction, promote giving back to society, and enhance organizational success.
