Written Assignment 2 Written Assignment 2 TESC- PHI370 Kerri Rios
Written Assignment 2 1. What are the five ways to prove the existence of God according to Thomas Aquinas (Chapter 3, section 3.2)? Summarize two of the arguments in premise-and-conclusion form. What objections do you see to the arguments? The five ways to prove the existence of God according to Thomas Aquinas is Motion, Efficient causes, possibility and necessity. Gradation of being and design. If you are religious, specifically a Christian, than you have been taught to believe that everything was created and comes from God. In the world of sensible things we find there is an order of efficient causes. There is no case known in which a thing is found to be the efficient cause of itself. So the premise for this would be the view as to all things that origin cannot be definitely explained was has to be created from a greater being, God. If we look at life in the ocean, fish and organisms original origin comes from where? Many faith believers will tell you they come from God, which their creation is from God. Same could be said as to human beings, to exam DNA, bones, organs etc... How was the first man created without God? Based on the Second way the arguments conclusion would be God is the creator of all things and that nothing can be the cause of itself that nothing exists prior to itself. I believe non- believers will questions this logic, using scientific methods and analytical tools to make an argument that science and not God is responsible for creation of both man and mammal. Argument from possibility and necessity (reductio argument) is another way that can be argued from a religious perspective. Assume that every being is a contingent being under this way would be to further point out how human reproduce. So a child is contingent on the creation by the parents. There would be no child without the reproduction by the two parents. This one is rather tough, as it would also question is the birth of Jesus possible. Outside of the creation of Jesus, I would say there is sufficient evidence to support this way/argument. If we go back to biblical times, and examine the story of Moses and the arc. The reason he was told to take two of each animal was for reproduction, because without taking two the existence of that specie would no longer exist. In using this example it is clear that this way is correct in stating that assuming that every being is a contingent being.
