2 Ethical Violation Related to The Code of Ethics The article I found that demonstrates or discusses an ethical issue for a human services professional is “ Social worker charged with coercing client into prostitution.” The former child services caseworker is being accused of recruiting a mother into prostitution in exchange for a favorable custody recommendation. According to the NASW ethical code 1.11 Social workers should not sexually harass clients. Sexual harassment includes sexual advances, sexual solicitation, request for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. The professional in the article told the mother that she would help falsify her drug test results to help her case and she would have a good recommendation if she would do the jobs. The caseworker also took more than twenty-five percent of the money that was made. The NASW ethical code 1.06 states that social workers should not take unfair advantage of any professional relationship or exploit others to further their personal, religious, political, or business interests. The professional knew the children were in foster care as she was the one managing the case. The caseworker was a part of an “extensive prostitution ring” and used her professional tile to manipulate the mother with bribes, just so she could make a quick buck. The caseworker was using her authority to lie on records showing that the mother was improving and following the rules that were placed for her to get custody back over her children. The professional had crossed the lie between personal business and being a professional. The casework dragged the client into her own personal business affairs and trafficked the women for her own financial again. The caseworker had also made treats to the mother pertaining to the prostitution and her children . According to NASW ethical code 1.01 social workers primary
3 responsibility is to promote the wellbeing of clients . In general, clients’ interests are primary. However, social workers’ responsibility to the larger society or specific legal obligations may on limited occasions supersede the loyalty owed clients, and clients should be so advised. (Examples include when a social worker is required by law to report that a client has abused a child or has threatened to harm self or others.) As a human service worker your main goal is the wellbeing of the client. To make sure they are healthy, safe, have the support and help needed to oneself. Clients go to professionals for guidance and support the professional is supposed to be someone they can confide in and trust. Your job is to make sure the client is improving with the progress made and to help guide them where they need it the most. As a human service professional, you should provide services to the client only in the context of a professional relationship based when appropriate on valid informed consent. As a professional your job is to make sure no harm comes to the client or others around the client. If there is reason to believe that one may harm themselves or others than by the federal law the professional is required to report it without informing the client. The caseworker in the article put the client in direct harm and she would even drive the women to and from jobs. The professional not only put the client in harm’s way but herself as well as the mother’s children in the foster care. When the caseworker would lie on the records, she was showing the mothers progress when in reality it was all false. If the caseworker would have gotten away with the crimes, she has committed then the children would be in an even worse situation and the mother might not ever get her children back. The caseworker did not think of the wellbeing of the client or children as she used the mothers weak state and need for help to her advantage.
