A personal factor that guides my ethical decision when choosing to support or not support a specific cause is knowing if it is right or wrong. Just because some people think that it is right and or appropriate does not actually make it right. I need to be able to research the topic at hand to make the best decision. Is the organization supporting the cause doing it for the right decision or is there another reason that they are doing it? Does the cause align with my values and beliefs? I cannot always justify supporting a cause that does not align with who I am and what I believe in regardless of who is in support of the cause.
Social factors that guide my ethical decision when choosing to support or not support a specific cause include those closest to me (family and friends). It is hard to get truly involved in a cause without having the support of those closest to me. I may have my opinion, but I like to hear their opinions as well to know if they feel the same way as I do. If not, can I convince them otherwise? With a good enough cause, I should be able to sway those around me since we almost uphold the same values and beliefs. Also, being able to hear other people’s views makes it easier to make informed decisions.
One way that I can decrease cognitive dissonance in order to realign my ideals and actions is to change my behavior. Changing my behavior will help me restore consistency in my life. When you have two conflicting thoughts at the same time, or when you engage in behavior that conflicts with your beliefs, you are apt to feel a sense of discomfort (Northrup, 2024).
For example, you know that UV rays from the sun can cause cancer, but you love to be in the sun. You choose to put SPF 30 or higher sunscreen on every time you choose to go outside. This will allow you to be in the sun and worry less about getting skin cancer from being in the sun all day.
One way that I can increase my cognitive consonance to realign my ideals and actions is to take one step at a time. You need to remind yourself that you cannot accomplish everything all at once. If you want to reduce your stress levels, you can take steps to help. If having a messy house is causing you stress and you do not feel like you can accomplish it all at once, you can do one room at a time. It is not a race to finish it is just about finishing each step to be able to go to the next
