NURSING PHILOSOPHY
My philosophy of nursing consists of three parts. First of all, I believe that in order to be a nurse, one must display honesty, professionalism, and a compassion to care for others. Secondly, I strongly believe that patient independence is key to recovery. Being independent is important when it comes to an individuals’ health. Promoting independence allows the patient to live up to his or her full potential. We as health care workers should be allowing the patient to do
as much for themselves as possible to maintain independence and promote optimal functioning. Thirdly, a strong belief of mine is to always treat every patient the same way I would want my family or loved one to be treated. To me a nurse must be an honest caring professional with lots of compassion. Due to our honesty, a nurse is an individual who is trusted, and looked up to. A nurse is someone who is has spent tireless hours becoming proficient in the medical field. A nurse is someone who devotes themselves to their patients that they sometimes forget to take care of themselves. Without honest, professional, caring and compassionate nurses, nursing would not be what it is today. Nursing is an ever evolving career. As students, we are required to take general education
courses as well as basic nursing courses such as foundations, medical-surgical, psychiatric, pediatric, and maternity in order to become nurses. I believe that general education courses will impact my professional role in a positive way. These courses will help me build knowledge, as well as expose me to subjects that will allow me to build my professionalism when it comes to nursing. I believe that in the nursing field one will never stop learning. As a nurse, you will have mandatory trainings, and continuing education requirements to maintain your license. As a nurse you also have the opportunity to continue your education in order to advance your career if you choose. As long as you are a nurse, learning will take place throughout your entire career.
NURSING PHILOSOPHY
The theorist that I believe most correlates to my values and beliefs about nursing would be Hildegard Peplau, founder of the interpersonal relations theory. I chose this theory because of her key idea of patient independence. This relates to patient independence because it allows the patient to take charge and make informed decisions about their care. I believe patient independence is key in helping the patient recover. This theory ultimately promotes independent thinking and decision making. A few centuries ago, nursing was known for the nurse caring for the patient; requiring the nurse to do everything for the patient while they lay sick in bed. During
this time, the patient was considered to have no say in their treatment. Today’s nursing has evolved to patient-centered care; where the focus is on the patient, but allows the patient to be part of the team that decides on the his or her care.
Peplau’s model of the Interpersonal Relations plays a big part in what I do as a psychiatric nurse on a daily basis. This model focuses on one aspect of psychiatric treatment: problem solving. The importance of this model is that the nurse assists the patient in identifying the problem, and then uses communication skills that promote the patient to come up with problem solving techniques on their own. This promotes independent thinking of the patient, which I believe is a key part in the recovery of the psychiatric patient.
Another important part of nursing is personal wellness. We were asked to come up with a
Personal Wellness Plan. After creating my wellness plan in week three, I have learned just how important personal wellness really is. I have discovered what I need to work on in my life to achieve personal wellness; which will in turn allow me to become the best professional nurse I can be. Personal wellness relates to Peplau’s model and my philosophy or nursing because it focuses on the treatment of mental health. Mental health is one of the categories of the wellness

plan. You must achieve and maintain mental wellness in order to have overall personal wellness. Wellness is needed in order to be successful not only in life, but in this BSN program as well.
It is not uncommon for an individual to experience conflict during their career in the nursing field. Conflict is something that every professional must overcome. Conflict management is often difficult due to the fact that people have their own individual personalities types, as well as conflict management skills. During this course I have discovered that my personality type is Defender – ISFJ. According to 16 Personalities, a defender personality type has strengths described as supportive, reliable, patient, observant, enthusiastic, loyal, and hard-
working. (n.d.) 16 Personalities also states that defenders often display weaknesses that can be described as humble and shy, take things too personally, overload themselves, as well as reluctant to change. (n.d.) After reviewing my personality test, I would have to agree with the results. I believe I’m loyal, reliable, as well as a hard worker. I also agree that my weaknesses are
that I’m shy, and sometimes tend to overload myself. I could foresee this being an issue during conflict management as a professional nurse because I tend to be shy, and take things personally.
I may be afraid to speak up in fear of hurting someone’s feelings. I can see that I have some growing and learning to do when it comes to conflict management in professional nursing.
When it comes to being a professional nurse, safety is and always will be a top priority. Safety is one of the QSEN competencies. According to QSEN Institute, Safety is defined as minimizing risk of harm to patients and providers through both system effectiveness and individual performance (2014). Although one of my beliefs is promoting independence, we need to remember that safety will always come first. For this reason, we are monitoring and observing our patients extensively while they are attempting to maintain independence during their recovery.
NURSING PHILOSOPHY
I feel as though being a leader does not come easy. Although one may face hardships or even conflicts when it comes to leading a team, I believe one must continue to put fourth effort into becoming a better leader. In my experience as a new charge nurse on my unit, I have learned
to conduct myself professionally while still being kind and compassionate to the staff working underneath me. The qualities I tend to strive for in the leadership role is that of a teacher, supporter, and role model. As I strive to be a sufficient leader and supporter of my patients, I also
have to keep in mind that my coworkers are also in need of my support and teaching. I try to be the best role model that I can possibly be for my patients, as well as my coworkers. I realize that I have lots of room for improvement, but I am more than excited about being on this journey to obtain my BSN and allow me to be the best leader and nurse that I can be.
