Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m very pleased to enclose my business proposal for Ye Old Paper Mill. Having recently evaluated employment satisfaction cards and profits declining, my team and I have been asked to
explore consequentialist ethical theories and how they can be implemented in the workplace to create a perfect boss. I know that no one is perfect, but that should not stop us from trying our best to improve our work environment from a financial and employee perspective. First and foremost, I will be discussing some of the key features of consequentialist ethical theories.
I look forward to the possibility of working with you to make Ye Old Paper Mill a success in the coming months and years.
I am eager to hear your comments and answer any questions you may have. You can reach me at my extension 6532 or email me at Tinamarie.nelson@YOPM.com. Thank you in advance for your time and attention. Sincerely, Tinamarie Nelson
HR Manager

Introduction
Having recently evaluated employment satisfaction cards and profits declining, my team and I have been asked to explore consequentialist ethical theories and how they can be implemented in the workplace to create a perfect boss. I know that no one is perfect, but that should not stop us from trying our best to improve our work environment from a financial and employee perspective. First and foremost, I will be discussing some of the key features of consequentialist ethical theories.
Key Features of Consequentialist Ethical Theories
Among the most significant ethical theories is the consequentialist theory, which is based on the principle that individual actions or decisions are judged based on the magnitude of their goodness and their outcome or consequences (Taylor, 2016).
The primary features of this framework are that positive results depicted by one's actions illustrate the other party. The action resulting in goodness is grounded on the action's ability to bring well-being, pleasure, and happiness, as well as other optimistic emotions that bring happiness than pain. This indicates that people must always prefer actions that bring more good than pain. These theories are meant to mold people's behavior to ensure they bring more good than evil. Individuals are encouraged to make good decisions rather than those that result in suffering under this theory (Taylor, 2016).
Differences between the Consequentialist Ethical Theories
Consequentialism is based on three main theories: utilitarianism, egoism, and hedonism (Khan, 2016). Utilitarianism believes that choosing the right option will benefit most people. A
5
more self-focused theory, egoism argues that whichever path provides the greatest self-
satisfaction should be chosen and actions should be justified based on it (Khan, 2016). On the other hand, hedonism argues that a person is incapable of living without pleasure or happiness. The concept of egoism introduces the concept that different parties perceive actions differently. According to utilitarianism, any action taken should bring the greatest happiness to the greatest number of people (Shaver, 2019).
By contrast, Egoism holds that any action taken - good or bad - can be justified if it results in a positive outcome for the masses. In each of the three theories, pleasure and happiness
are the ultimate goals. How and for whom these goals are achieved is what makes them different (Shaver, 2019). For example, when a worker steals from their workplace, it may bring happiness to the beneficiary, and this may have a negative impact on the company. Pros & Cons of utilitarian in a workplace
When utilitarian theory is at play, decisions and management styles may positively affect morale and productivity. Alternatively, altering operating hours may increase employee satisfaction but reduce profits. Employees who believe in different theories can be handled by management, but it will be a challenge (Khan, 2016). How does happiness and pleasure factor in to these theories?
It is evident that the quality of the actions determines the consequences of one's actions or decisions. According to utilitarian theory, individuals should strive to make others happy through
their actions and decisions A person's happiness and pleasure can be used to justify their actions. Hedonism, on the other hand, argues that people should strive to gain happiness or
6
pleasure because humanity cannot survive without them. The actions of all players in the company are required to reduce pain and bring happiness in the case scenario.
Would it be possible for a manager, who follows a different ethical perspective, to effectively
manage subordinates who follow a particular consequentialist theory?
Employees who believe in different theories, such as consequentialism, may pose some difficulties for managers. This results from their differing viewpoints on happiness. Training your managers to ensure that even if they face an ethical dilemma, they will not let differences of
opinion about any particular consequentialist theory interfere with their duties as managers.
Conclusion
My proposal for this company would be the utilitarian theory, since I believe it has the greatest potential for mutual benefit. An increase in happiness and pleasure among the most significant number of employees can increase the company's productivity, quality, and profitability.
