Discussion Chapter 7 and 8 -worth 50 points Do both A and B.   In each, use and cite the theories and support your analysis with material from the text and class. You do not need to use them all, but use at least two per section.Try to use different ones so you get practice with them. Cite your sources (including the text). o The theories are Kantian CI, Aristotelian VE, Utilitarianism, Feminism, Egoism, Rawls, Nozick. A and B should each be 200-300 words.  o Include your word count at the end of each section.  Post your assignment as an attachment (35 points)  After you post your assignment, reply once (15 points)   o Your reply should be about 100 words   o Should address specific ideas from your classmates  o Offer theoretical content.   A. Explain the best ways to decrease employee turnover using at least two theories. (Ch 7) Two theories that I will applied to address this issue are Kantian Categorical Imperative and Egoism. Kantian CI emphasizes the importance of treating individuals as ends in themselves, not merely as means to an end. In the context of employee turnover, this could mean providing employees with meaningful work, fair compensation, and opportunities for growth and development. By treating employees with respect and dignity, businesses can foster a positive work environment that encourages employees to stay. Pg. 196 “T he employee must not act in a way that benefits him- or herself (or any other third party), especially when doing so would create a conflict of interest with the employer.” This approach aligns with the Kantian principle of respecting the inherent worth of everyone. When employees feel valued and respected, they are more likely to remain loyal to the company, thereby reducing turnover. (Pg., 210) “ Employees, in fact, have a legal and ethical duty not to be violent at work, and managers have a duty to prevent or stop violence.” Kant’s theory proposes that the morality of an action should be based on whether that action itself is right or wrong under a series of ruled, rather than based on the consequences of the action.   Egoism, on the other hand, focuses on the pursuit of one's self-interest. From a business perspective, this could mean recognizing that keeping employees satisfied and engaged is in the company's best interest, as it leads to increased productivity and reduced costs associated with hiring and training new employees. This perspective aligns with the egoistic principle of pursuing one's own interests. Codes of Conduct (Pg. 210) “ Companies have a right to insist that their employees, including managers, engage in ethical decision-making. To help achieve this goal, most businesses provide a written code of ethics or code of conduct for all employees to follow.” When businesses recognize that their success is tied to the satisfaction and engagement of
their employees, they are more likely to invest in strategies that reduce turnover, such as providing competitive salaries, offering professional development opportunities, and fostering a positive work culture. (Number count 332) B. Evaluate the ways diversity increases productivity using at least two theories. (Ch 8) Two theories that I will applied to address this issue are Utilitarianism and Feminism. Utilitarianism, which seeks the greatest good for the greatest number, supports diversity as it can lead to better decision-making and problem-solving, resulting in increased productivity. A diverse workforce can provide a broader range of ideas and insights, leading to more effective and efficient solutions. “ Attracting workers who are not all alike is an important first step in the process of achieving greater diversity.” (Pg. 233) This perspective aligns with the utilitarian principle of maximizing happiness for the greatest number of people . Diversity strengthens the company’s internal relationships with employees and improves employee morale, as well as its external relationships with customer groups. Communication, a core value of most successful businesses, becomes more effective with a diverse workforce. “Performance improves for multiple reasons, not the least of which is that acknowledging diversity and respecting differences is the ethical thing to do” (Pg. 235) . When businesses embrace diversity, they are able to tap into a wider range of experiences and perspectives, which can lead to innovative solutions and improved decision-making.   Feminism, with its emphasis on equality and inclusivity, also supports workplace diversity. It advocates for equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender, race, or other characteristics. In the Legal Protections section, Pg. 244 As of January 2018, twenty states prohibit sexual orientation discrimination in private and public workplaces and five more states prohibit sexual orientation discrimination only in public workplaces, not in private.” If we consider the movement towards the sexual orientation discrimination will eventually be established in all 50 states this perspective would align with the feminist principle of promoting equality and inclusivity. Businesses can benefit from the unique skills and perspectives that each individual brings, leading to increased productivity regardless of their sexual orientation. “ Many companies choose to do the ethically and socially responsible thing and treat all workers equally, for example, by extending the same benefits to same-sex partners that they extend to heterosexual spouses.(Pg.246) When businesses commit to creating this type of work environment, they can attract and retain a wider range of talent, which can lead to improved performance and productivity. Extra Credit: If you want to take the personality text in Chapter 7.3 and discuss it here you can do that as extra credit-  add this to the bottom of your assignment. It is not included in your word count.  For fellow employees to effectively cooperate, management within the organization must work to make cooperation one of the company’s core attribute. Teamwork must become deeply entrenched in the company’s culture. Leaders must create a setting where staff are not afraid to express their ideas. The management must be able to furnish the teams with the resources they require. This would include convenient workplace environment where team can work collaboratively. In chapter 7 on the page 210 under the Work style – “There is no right or wrong style, but it benefits any worker to know his or her preferences and something about the work personalities of colleagues.” When shaping teams, managements needs to be able to recognize each employee’s skills and place them with coworkers who complement those strengths in order for them to successfully work collaboratively. Because when each team member excels at their specific role, they will yield outcomes that exceed your expectations. Employees should be trained and encourage to learn on a regular basis. Being a mentor or coach in the organization will help boost their confident and improve abilities to preform more efficiently, learn specific skills in order to be effective collaborators. Setting expectations and clarifying roles, this is something management must ensure in order for every employee to understand not only his or her role, but also the roles of those around them. Management should quickly resolve team conflict, as they establish a system that allows any employee to voice their concerns without apprehension of consequences. Employees who are aware of the system and are self-assured that the conflict will be resolved reasonably will be able to return to the team in a better and healthier manner. Lastly, encourage employees to socialize outside of the workplace. Individuals need to get to know each other outside of the office, such as by having a casual meal or heading out for an after-work drink. Positive grapevine will assist in eliminating office barriers and increase cooperation and coordination because coworkers will now have built trust and will be more comfortable working around each other.
