Vaccine War
Which of the four perspectives do you think this film most closely aligns with?
The documentary aligns better with Functionalism, because it represents society as a complex system
whose parts work together to promote solidarity and stability. The vaccination program is a way of
population and the government getting united with one goal of wellbeing of all. It is an agreement that is
not official, is something that is cultural expected but not forced by law. But the tradition of vaccination
it is important for the balance of the population. Which also brings the other possible side, which is the
conflict theory. The film shows how many conflicts were created by the dissemination of claims made
about vaccinations, causing brain damage or being the cause of autism. We see there is a fight for power
and resources to prove each other point of view.
Describe a scene or conversation from the film that supports your opinion
.
One scene of the movie that I think shows the functionalism is when Dr. Fauci acknowledges that are
some rare cases of reactions to vaccines, and if that’s the case the child should wait later in life to get
vaccinated. However, he emphasized that the vaccines are proven to work and that the amount of
people that had the reaction is so minimal. Here we see the acknowledgment that it is an issue, but in
general the rule is predominant, and brings stability to the wellbeing of the population. On the other hand, we can see that the film brings to light that social media has created a lot of conflicts
by causing a democratization of medical information, and the dissemination of the negative side effects
of vaccines, which is an example of people trying to use the internet as the main capitalization of their
sides and trying to bring followers to their cause. We have two sides measuring forces and resources to
prove their points but no one is coming into an agreement. As a consequence, we have many parents
making the decision of not vaccinating their children. That decision is becoming very popular and
creating some issues in local community around the Globe and raising concerns about future epidemics
of diseases that were long ago eradicated.
What did you find most interesting about this film?
I liked how the film showed both sides, facts showing that the CDC does acknowledge the risks of brain
injury as a side effect of vaccines. I think is such a delicate matter, because I do believe in the efficacy of
vaccines. I am a parent that is in favor of vaccinations and have followed the agenda for vaccinations and
never saw any reaction from my own children, like many parents of autistic kids have reported, even
though later on my two kids were diagnosed on the autism spectrum. The video brought a lot of mixed feelings for me and the questioning if I should have done it differently.
However, the studies made in many countries shows no connection between vaccination and the
development of autism, brought me a sense of peace, and I think I did the right thing for my kids and
society. During this week’s devotional Brother Villar talked about being peacemakers and what that
means. I liked he emphasized that doesn’t mean you are a meek or an unheard person, on the contrary,
it shows our capacity to stand for our beliefs in a firm way, but not forgetting to respect others’ beliefs. I
believe this is the case with vaccination. I can’t force anyone to have the same views, but I can be a good
listener and understand others’ reasoning.
