In the scenario in which a prominent politician has arrived at a restaurant and the serving staff want the manager to ask him to leave due to his political view. This is a very relevant scenario to the socially charged political landscape of the USA as many people let their political view influence what businesses they support. In this scenario as the manager, I would inform my serving staff that we have an obligation to serve customers that come in to the best of our ability and not let our political views affect how we conduct business. To help apply to the serving staff I would use Kantianism to appeal to their ethical side to support this decision. Within Kantianism
there is the idea of Humanity Formulation, Humanity formulation focuses on how we ought to treat rational beings, whether oneself or others. This breaks down in layman terms that we should
treat others and ourselves as valuable rational beings and not fail to treat them as a person (Smith, 2015). In a place of business, specifically a restaurant, as a member of the staff it is important to conduct yourself and serve those within the scope of your duties. As long as the politician is not being disrespectful to those in business and not disrupting other there is no reason for him to be asked to be removed. Now while a manager has a duty to protect his employees, I don’t believe that extends to political views as that is a personal matter and varies to each individual and should not affect the service we would provide. I would brief my serving staff that while I respect their opinions that if they let their personal views affect how our business conducts itself they would be asked to go home for the day without pay. Along with this I would convey that the politician will be held to the same standard and I would not tolerate disrespect or rudeness to my staff as my employees, they are also afforded that protection. The important thing to remember is that we are a business and we have a obligation to uphold the service we provide no matter what our customers’ political views as long as they are respectful and conduct themselves as rational human beings.
