My Philosophy of Education is closely related to what the Essentialists and Perennialists believe.
Like the Essentialists, I believe there should be a back to the basics approach to teaching. The
curriculum should focus on subjects such as writing, reading, history, science, and math. These are
essentials that all students should know. There should be mastery of material of the essential
subjects before the students move on to the next grade level. The curriculum should be rigorous and
the standards should be set high. The high standards that are set for the students should strengthen
the student's intellect and enhance their moral qualities.

Most of the time, the teacher should stay away from the student's interests that interfere with
academic cirriculum.
Student's interests should be widely expressed in extra curriculum activities.
The teacher should ultimately decide a lot of the curriculum based on the needs of each student. This
brings me to the part of Progressivism that I believe to be very influential in the way students learn
and how they increase their level of knowledge and skills. Students should be grouped by abilities.
When I observed a 4th grade class this semester students were working at their own levels and with
other peers at the same level. The students were working on the exact same subject matter, but the
level of difficulty was unique to the individual. The desks were set up in small groups for the
students to work together on material. The students took tests every few months in order for the
teacher to examine their level of learning and place them with the appropriate group and correct
learning material. The students improved overall from test to test. No two students are alike.
Working at their own level and with others at the same level increase their ability to learn and
increase their level of knowledge to where it should be.
The students should learn to think critically, hypothetically, analytically, and creatively. During the

Reflection on my Education Philosophy
Since taking my first few educational courses in education, I have realized that my philosophy on
education changes as I learning more about the profession I have entered. Every time I think I have
come to a final belief statement, I learn something new about teaching and sometimes the things I
learn causes me to alter my philosophy. Therefore, I will share with you what I believe about
teaching and what I've learned at this point.
As a future teacher in today's society and generation, I believe the educational system must
accommodate the individual and the diverse needs of each child. Many factors should be thought
about when forming a philosophy on education
. Factors as far as the increase of single parent
families and dual careers, the family structure is changing and this may play a significant part in our
students. Furthermore, the issues such as teen pregnancy and drugs and much more, children are
facing more complicated issues than they ever had before. A sound philosophy on education must be
developed within the framework of social value systems. Our children are our future resources. All
children can be guided to become well adjusted, functional and intelligent adults for their own
benefit and the benefit for others in society. An educator should motivate and stimulate each child to

have always wanted to help people in some way, yet I was not sure of what area or angle to go with

Through all of these encounters I have had with children in the past, the primary experience that has
developed upon my views of the nature of children, and has inspired me to choose a career in the

To me knowledge and the acquiring of knowledge is not just one aspect set in stone with only one
path leading to its attainment. Knowledge has various aspects to it, and since each individual has
various aspects to them the gaining of knowledge is obtained in a variety of ways being specific to
the needs of the individual. Knowledge is both relative and absolute. Certain types of knowledge
can be taught to an individual, while other types of knowledge can be discovered. We are taught
certain truths in life, and we discover truths on the basis of personal exploration of the knowledge
that we have acquired throughout our life times.
The overall purpose of education goes beyond exposing students to and giving them knowledge.
The teacher must possess the ability to enable the students to not only function in the world, but also
to critically think, analyze, impact, and interact within it. Knowledge and education are beautiful

My philosophical view on education is idealistic. I believe that teachers should be role models for
their students. This is one of the reasons for my wanting to become a teacher. I also enjoy seeing
people learn things that are difficult for them.
I plan on teaching history, which would be the theme for the looks of my classroom. The walls
would be filled with posters of important events in history. There would also be pictures of
important people in history with interesting quotes by those people. I would keep the colors in the

If a junior high or high school student would get caught cheating on a test they would be given a
zero. This is considered a traditional approach to discipline.
The text book would be used frequently in the class room. The text books would be the main form
of information for the students. Movies and pictures that relate to the subject being discussed would
also be used to help the students visualize what was going on. The students would be pushed to
discuss the subject during class. The atmosphere would be set up so that students whom have
questions or a comment would be able to do so without mockery or agitation. This would be done
by opening the floor up for discussion. I would control the content matter so that no one would be
made fun of and the discussion would be clean. I would show my leadership by doing and saying
nothing that I would not want the students to do or stay. I would try to lead by example.
Educational reform is a touchy subject, but everything could use improving. You can always get
better at something and sometimes you must change to become better. I do not believe that testing
should be the only way to place students. Some students do not test as well as others. I believe that

Each student has a different learning style and as a teacher I have to incorporate a mixture of
resources to engage all of my learners. I will use a variety of authentic materials and tools to meet
the needs of the diverse students. Such items will include the use of songs, movies, pictures,
newspapers, magazines, literature and games to attract their attention. Through these tools I will be
able to present the subject matter in a unique way, thus allowing my student to learn the lesson in the
manner that suits them best. Using visual, kinesthetic, and auditory activities will enrich the lessons

The learning experience should be that of a collective nature where students are able to
indiscriminately relate to the information, re–teach the information and have a balanced
incorporation of all the learning centers in society; including the home and the church. The goal of
this incorporation is to create a balanced learning environment that facilitates holistic development
in the young mind. As professionals entrusted with the shaping of young minds, teachers must
facilitate learning and personal, spiritual, ethical and academic development. My philosophy for
education is a multi–part philosophy that encapsulates the idea of holistic and inclusive learning.
The philosophy caters for the overall shaping and development of the young mind and includes
aspects of balanced training, incorporated teachings and it generally focuses on training students to
become teachers.
In this student–centered philosophy, learning is loosely influenced by the facilitator. As such,
independence, exploration and hands–on learning is successfully fostered. The distinction between
teachers, trainers and facilitators must be duly noted in order to fully grasp their role in this

Now that I have addressed the nature of students, I shall now discuss the nature of knowledge. First
of all I believe knowledge is relative, it changes everyday with new discoveries being realized all
the time. Knowledge is also different for everyone, and it depends on the person, place, and time. As

knowledge we can keep life at it's present state and allow it to move on. For example, if a caveman
who learned to make fire died without passing on his knowledge, the knowledge would die with
him. Therefore the ones who did not know how to make fire would freeze to death the next winter. If

When I become a teacher I plan to have my students work in cooperative groups because this allows
them a chance to share their knowledge and ideas with their peers. Due to the fact that most students
are on different developmental levels, those students who are of higher developmental levels can

should not be scared to let their students participate in group work because I think it is a great
method of learning. I will establish an authoritarian classroom to make sure the students behave. I

provides a framework for thinking about educational issues. (Kauchak and Eggen, 197) Teachers use
philosophy everyday in their classrooms. From the time the first student enters their room until the
last student walks out, philosophy is affecting the way the teacher runs his/her classroom and how

Lectures, questioning, practice and feedback are some of the teaching methods I would use in my
classroom. These follow the Essentialism philosophy. I believe that consistence in a classroom is
crucial but also you have to mix things up in order to keep the students attention and keep them
interested in the curriculum. On the other hand, learning should not be all fun and games. Students
will never take learning seriously if there is not seriousness implanted in their learning experience. It
is my opinion classroom learning environments should be highly structured with strong focuses on
academic work as well as essential knowledge and skills. As I stated before, a child should have just
as much academic knowledge as they do knowledge of how the world works around them. This
follows both Essentialism as well as Perennialism. Perennialism is an educational philosophy
suggesting that nature is constant and that schools should teach classic knowledge. (Kauchak and
Eggen, 201) Lastly, I feel that teachers should offer frequent objective and performance assessments
and feedback to their students. Students should be periodically assessed on their work and given

Wanting to become a kindergarten teacher, I strongly believe in the value of good elementary
schools. I think the emphasis of the curriculum should be on the four major subjects: language,
math, science, and social studies. The extras, computer, art, music, and physical education, should
be taught as well, but without the strong emphasis. I believe this because I have seen many students
in high schools that cannot recall basic knowledge in the major subjects because either they were not
taught it or it was not emphasized to the extent needed to remember it. In terms of philosophy, I feel
I benefit most from the pragmatic approach to teaching. This approach states that teachers feel the
classroom is a community of learners, not just a teacher standing in front of a group of students. I
believe this is true because it is my opinion that if the teacher is learning and exploring along with

I had to start thinking like a teacher, but I also knew I didn't want to forget being a student.
Teaching is learning; learning is teaching.
The relationship between teaching and learning, I believe, recalls John Keats' beauty and truth
equation: "Beauty is truth, truth beauty." The pair illustrates a symmetrical purity that is both
obvious and profound. Symmetry exists in education, as well. One must learn in order to teach; one
teaches in order to learn. The college degree does not signal the end of learning; it merely indicates
that each graduate possesses adequate tools for the next phase of his or her educational process.
Scholarship continues because recent research, fresh voices, and new events must be explored.
Learning in my own discipline of English is an act of infinite fascination. For example, each writer
leads the reader on an odyssey of discovery, seeking textual and contextual influences; each writer is
continually examined and re–examined, adding volumes to the existing critical library; each writer
inspires another, becoming the next force keeping the quest alive.

My Personal Philosophy of Education Ever since I was a little girl, I knew that in my future I
wanted to become a teacher. I always looked up to my teachers, especially the ones I had in

It is my sincere hope that every student should look forward to coming into the classroom ready for
new adventures and a whole new world of information every day. Education continually brings us
new adventures just waiting for us to experience its wonder and possibilities. I believe that students,
when presented with a wide variety of interesting lessons, can become interested and motivated in a
way that they never have before. A large part of my educational philosophy is based on the
fundamentals of Progressivism. This philosophy, founded by John Dewey, organizes schools around
the concerns, curiosity, and real world experiences of students. I agree with these ideas because
people must continually learn to keep up with today's fast paced world. I believe that when learning
is relevant and enjoyable students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning.
Progressivism has respect for individuality, a high regard for science, and a receptivity to change

Education is important because it helps students to grow physically and mentally. The overall
purpose of education is to help prepare students for what they plan to do in their lives. As Plato
would state, schools should help students find their roles in society. If a student wants to attend
college, that student should take courses that will prepare them for higher education. The student
interested in pursuing a trade upon graduating high school should follow an educational path that
will prepare them for such work.
A teacher should allow students to explore many educational options and experience different
things. An educator should feel a sense of accomplishment if he or she has exposed their students to
a wide array of concepts and ideas. Students should be able to leave the classroom not only having
the skills they need, but also with the ability to think for themselves. Independent thinking and
respect for others are valuable ideas of Rousseau's. Students may not always agree with others, but
if they are open–minded, the perspectives of others can be a great learning tool. My particular style

The teacher can only dream that maybe he or she will be able to help a child to find his or her place
in the world and make a change to the betterment of our society. In composing my philosophy I will
share why I am compelled to teach and my philosophy in regard to the education process. I will also

The one approach I use with one child might not be the same I can use with another. All children's

understanding and attention during the lessons. The flexible means of presentation such as lecture,
group work, and hands on work allows all students to learn the material as they each have a different
primary mode of learning visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile. As an educator, it is my job to
find new ways for my students to learn that coincides with their particular learning style and takes
advantage of their strengths. In all practical terms, this will mean finding new ways for each of my
