Contraception and Assisted Reproductive Technologies
Both of the readings make the case that their arguments represent the best "Catholic"
position on the use of contraception.
Which argument is more compelling on this point?
I think Wijngaards' argument stood out as the most compelling regarding this subject
matter. Upon conducting a comparative analysis of the two readings, it was observed that
Wijngaards' assertion lacks any reference to relationships, marriage, or love (Wijngaards Institute
for Catholic Research, 2016). The statement explicitly asserts the unacceptability of
contraception and advocates for refraining from interfering with the process of childbirth for
human beings. The reading presents a compelling argument that individuals should be obligated
to bear children, regardless of their marital status. The additional reading titled "Self Gift- The
Heart of Human Vitae" provides a more comprehensive explanation of why contraception in
relationships or marriage is discouraged. It posits that life is a gift universally granted to all
individuals.
What are the strongest arguments against using contraception, and how do you evaluate
those arguments? The arguments need not explicitly refer to the Catholic tradition. For
instance, you might look at this Institute that does research on Fertility Awareness
Methods.
One of the strongest contentions against the utilization of contraception is rooted in the
notion that sexual intercourse possesses an inherent procreative purpose. Based on my
assessment, contraception is advisable except in cases where individuals are in a committed
romantic relationship or have entered into a marriage. I hold a dissenting view towards the two
readings. However, if I were to choose which one to align with, my preference would lean
3
towards
The Heart of Human Vitae
(Smith et al., 2016). This reading provides a rationale for
refraining from contraception in the context of romantic relationships and marriage.
It is worth noting that options besides contraception, including fertility awareness methods
(FAM), involve learning to recognize and use one's body's natural fertility cues to predict
ovulation and conception. Family Awareness Month (FAM) empowers individuals and couples to
make natural family planning decisions. FAM may seem like a good option for people interested
in non-conventional birth control methods, but it does involve close monitoring, education, and
self-discipline.
In evaluating these arguments against contraception, it is clear that the problem is
complex, with different people seeing it from different angles depending on their beliefs, cultural
backgrounds, and life experiences. I believe individuals should be granted the autonomy to
utilize contraception and exercise agency over their own bodily choices. I hold divergent views
regarding the use of contraception by married couples. Partners should possess the autonomy to
determine whether they desire a mutually beneficial relationship.
