Discussion 5: Promoting Optimal Cognitive Health
Must post first.
This discussion provides you with an opportunity to further your understanding of culturally competent
and spiritual care. You will create an older adult care philosophy statement based on your spirituality
and cultural values about aging and senior care.
1.
Identify your spiritual and cultural values, beliefs and attitudes Using Module 5 materials (e.g.,
FACT, A Chaplain’s Tool for Assessing Spiritual Needs in an Acute
Care Setting
) and your life experiences, create a list of your spiritual and cultural values, beliefs
and attitudes towards aging and senior care.
2.
Post your philosophy statement (Due Thursday) Contribute meaningfully to the discussion by sharing your Older Adult Care Philosophy. Using
your list of values from Step 1 and notes in response to the following guiding questions,
formulate a
200-250
-word statement about your culturally competent and spiritual care
approach:
What are your older adult care values, beliefs and attitudes? How does your cultural background
shape your perceptions about aging and care practices?
How do you define spirituality?
How do you ensure that you provide culturally competent and spiritual care to older adults with
different cultural backgrounds and spiritual needs?
Start your statement with a brief description of your care services context, including your patients and
their care goals and challenges. Then, define culturally competent and spiritual care, explaining why you
have developed this particular definition (focus on your cultural background and spirituality). Finally,
provide an example of how you implement or plan to implement your definition of culturally competent
and spiritual care into practice. Support your arguments using this module material, the best available
evidence-based sources, and relate to your own life experiences. Provide all the references in
APA
Style
(7th edition).
3.
Respond to classmates (Due Sunday) After completing your own posting (which you must submit before you can view any of the
others), read your classmates’ posts and provide a response to at least one. Try to further the
discussion by bringing up an additional example or resource. This will help ensure that a
meaningful conversation takes place!
