Select one theory discussed during Topics 4 and 5. Describe how this theory applies to your future role in advanced nursing practice (individuals, families, communities, and special populations)? Why or why not? Use examples from your current practice to illustrate differences or similarities. Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory is beneficial for practice in pursuing more effective and better patient care and enables patients to be self-sufficient in caring for themselves. As patients become more knowledgeable about their disease, the obligation to change their behavior and care for them becomes greater (Current Nursing, 2020). They can also declare themselves fit for self-care when they have acquired the skills and knowledge to care for themselves. However, the degree of acquisition in knowledge and skills may vary with age, experience, culture, beliefs, and level of education. Therefore, the practical application of the theory must also vary according to each situation. Working with large elderly populations in acute care settings, we often see that some families keep their elderly patients well informed about their illness while other families make decisions for their elderly patients. It emphasizes the Self-Care Deficit part of Orem's theory, as some individuals rely entirely on nurses during their hospital stay. In such cases, it will be our job to encourage families and empower patients to be fit to provide self-care for themselves. By identifying each patient's individual needs and ensuring that each patient has the level of understanding and ability required for self-care, FNP can create an individual treatment plan for each patient. Furthermore, each patient will be able to create a basis for self-care using the individualized plan. References Current Nursing. (2020).
