Essay On Philosophy Of Nursing With the developments in the field of nursing, trends in theoretical writing have shifted focus to the philosophical nature of nursing. It has become almost mandatory for every practicing or student nurse to have their personal philosophy of nursing. The paper explores the philosophy of care as the root of the nursing profession and its application to the concepts of person, nursing, health, environment, nursing practice, education, administration, and research. Philosophy of Care A nurse's philosophy is a set of beliefs and values which a nurse chooses to direct his practice (Bruce, Rietze & Lim, 2014). The philosophy possibly based on beliefs that important to the individual, to their patients, families, communities, and colleagues. According to Merriam–Webster (2016), philosophy is "an analysis of the grounds of and concepts expressing fundamental beliefs" (para. 1). The beliefs that comprise a person's philosophy influence the choices that person makes. In the profession of nursing, it is critical to interact properly with people to attain a better result in the improvement of our workplace. Many people base their choice of profession on their beliefs, thereby ensuring that the principles of their career are consistent with their personal expectations. For example, getting a job or taking actions that are inconsistent with someone's beliefs is one of the causes of stress and burnout. It is healthy for individuals to clarify their philosophy to guide them to make choices and to live a life consistent with their beliefs and values. I believe that philosophy of nursing involves the knowledge of medicine while combining it with compassionate caring, advocacy, respects and the dignity of each patient. However, my passion to work on the healthcare field, made me put my pre–medicine studies to a standby, and enrolled in an emergency medical technician program. Upon completion of the EMT program, I obtained a Florida EMT license. Later that year, I started working for Florida Hospital Orlando, the second largest hospital in the nation as a psychiatric technician. While I had many family members who are nurses, I never really knew what nurses did in their job setting. In 2013 I enrolled at Keiser University Orlando, and transferred my credit from Valencia College, to start their nursing programs. Are human beings generally good and trustworthy or are they selfish and greedy? If humanity is the latter, than compassion towards others is not for their greater good, but for self–gratitude. It is hard to accept this thought process if you are a nurse or even know one. Compassion means to care and without either of these, nursing would flounder. Nurses seem to have an innate caring disposition about them. Think about how nurses are generally portrayed, tired, overworked, underpaid, but still going that extra mile with a smile on their face. Is this because nurses have compassion that the rest of the world is lacking, if humanity is selfish and greedy, or is it because nurses have the intrinsic ability to care?
