Interprofessional Collaboration Among Multiple Health Disciplines Advanced nursing practitioners are individuals tasked with performing specialized roles that can also be performed by the physicians. Over the years, the various tasks of nursing practitioners have transformed and still is transforming according to time and developments in the health care sector. Today, the practice is greatly influenced by the scope of practice and the need to provide an accurate response to the changing social and community needs in terms of health care delivery (McMullen et al., 2013). The roles of health care providers specifically the nurses in practice include performing a complex and comprehensive mental or physical assessment of the patient with certain health care complexities. The nurse is also tasked with the interpretation of the results from the assessment report to influence an accurate diagnosis for a progressive health care service. Nursing is also evolving into an empowerment center for the patients. Empowering patients also includes serving the patient's needs and encouraging the patient’s autonomy for better outcomes. The evolving roles can enhance the quality of care in several ways. For instance, efficient communication with patients and immediate families can encourage better progress by reducing anxiety and frustrations. Creating a patient-friendly environment is necessary, especially for the in-patients (Oelke, Besner, & Carter, 2014). The fact that nurses are tasked with expertly guiding patients reduces the time spent waiting for room allocation or directions to a specific room to check-on a family member. Challenges in the nursing practice profession vary depending on state laws and licensure. For instance, there are states which still limit the performance levels of nurses making it hard to operate fully in the health care sector (Peterson, 2017). Another challenge in the future may be the issue of physician-nursing practice competition. Over the past few years, nurses have gained
immense access to offering the same services as physicians. The rate is expected to rise as the need for new developments in nursing practice and the increase in health complexities advance (Peterson, 2017). As a result, both the nurses and the physician's focus may shift from offering services to competing or equalizing the profession since nurses can offer similar services as the physicians. Competition in nursing practice may trigger the development of a hostile working environment, especially for the nurses. In most cases, physicians may describe the nurses as people with limited experience and skills to offer certain services. Lack of collaboration between the nurses and physicians leads to a poor working environment thus encouraging workplace violence (Peterson, 2017). A hostile environment is a recipe for disaster where patient care services can also be limited. The confusion created between the nurses and the physicians lowers the quality of care thereby causing poor outcomes for the patient care services. Overcoming nurse practitioner barriers is a priority to eliminate the possibility of poor patient care services. There is a need to encourage the development of policy initiatives that allow and recognize nurse practitioners as qualified individuals who can offer quality services to patients. Nursing practice roles include acting as an advocate for either the patient or the health care delivery system (Kooienga & Carryer, 2015). Advocating for the adoption of policies that allow full training and education for nurse practitioners is a recommendation for change. Another recommendation for resolving the issue is transforming the health care system. There is a need to establish an integrated workforce between nurse practitioners and specialty physicians. Nurse practitioners must occupy an active role as a leader or a member of the interprofessional team to eliminate the issue of qualification standards between the physicians and nurse practitioners
(Kooienga & Carryer, 2015). Collaboration in an interprofessional platform is a vital aspect of enhancing the level of service delivery in health care.
