EVIDENCE BASE PRACTICE IN WORKPLACE 2 Evidence-Based Practice In Work Place The staff nurse’s role in evidence-based practice in the organization The staff nurse’s role in evidence-based practice (EBP) in a healthcare facility is to utilize all types of evidence and research to administer and influence the quality of care provided to patients by integrating patients in a more effective and personalized care plan. Staff nurses use evidence-based practice to pinpoint proper care strategies suitable for the treatment of their patients' specific conditions (Kueny, Shever, Lehan Mackin & Titler, 2015). Nurses have incorporated the EBP into their care plan and made it an integral aspect of exceptional patient care. Evidence-based practice helps staff nurses to develop and implement clinical questions that are, in effect, used to diagnose and identify a patient’s specific problem. Proper diagnosis is a vital component in caregiving because it helps nurses avoid making common healthcare errors such as misdiagnosis leading to administration or wrong medication, overdose, and wrong injections. Staff nurses also play an integral role in evidence-based practice by gathering the best evidence that is needed before proceeding with a medical procedure (Zolot, 2016). Nurses also have the role of assessing and examining the evidence in question to ascertain its flaws and potentials for use in healthcare. After gathering the best evidence and weighing its suitability, nurses apply the evidence in question to specific clinical practices then assess its result (Kueny, Shever, Lehan Mackin & Titler, 2015). This helps to establish the efficacy of the research evidence. In effect, evidence-based practice allows staff nurses to make and implement intricate healthcare decisions based on the patient perspective, clinical expertise, and high-quality and rigorous research reports. Hence, nurses have become a fundamental component of the
EVIDENCE BASE PRACTICE IN WORKPLACE 3 healthcare team that contributes to the provision of high-end patient care and drive a change in the EBP. How much colleagues value evidence-based practice on the nursing staff Nursing staffs highly value evidence-based practice. According to the chief nursing executive, nursing healthcare facilities value evidence-based practice even though some of them have not officially and consistently instigated it because they either somewhat or not at all use it. Facilities that use it show that EBP enables patients to take on an active role executing and following up on their care (Zolot, 2016). This is because evidence-based practice enables patients to share their preferences, voice their concerns, and make suggestions and ideas on how they would like to proceed with care. Further research indicates that evidence-based practice entails assimilating the best possible evidence from clinical expertise, research, and patients’ values and preference. Besides, health care facilities and caregivers can customize care to suit the patients' needs and the particular disorder that is being treated. Last but not least, evidence-based practice is highly valued because it is meant to provide the most suitable and satisfactory health care services available (Zolot, 2016). In return, this goes a long way to improving the patient’s outcome by addressing the issues that affect healthcare quality and cost to befit the patient’s needs and conditions (Kueny, Shever, Lehan Mackin & Titler, 2015). This is because patients always look for the most suitable and adequate care based on the available evidence.
