Review of the two articles: The term ‘theory’ is an abstract concept that needs to be defined for scientific research. These two articles aimed at helping to define this so that research can be tailored. The first article discussed how novice researchers needed more definition of theoretical and conceptual frameworks in qualitative research. Green (2014) reviewed that without the foundational work, it can be hard to define and guide the research. The second article dove deeper into defining theory. Connelly (2014) defines theory as a set of variables that can be tested. Using scientific research to narrow down a concept is the basis of theory and understanding the world we live in. Current research question: The concept that I have focused on is safer medication administration techniques. PICOT Question: Patient, Population or Problem P= In-patient adult population who is receiving prescription medication Intervention or exposure- I= Assessing if the correct medication is being given by hospital staff (Registered Nurses). Outcome-O= More successful medication administration, meaning less medication errors T- Medications given during any point of an in-patient stay in hospital. Reduction of harm or even death if medication errors are made. Incorporating theoretical frameworks for the difficult topic of medication errors and safety mechanisms, is hard, but these studies managed to do it well. The evidenced based studies that were examined for this project utilized theoretical frameworks to better determine why medication errors are made and how they are best prevented. The problem of medication errors is multifaceted and a complex issue to solve. Most nurses are taught safe medication administration in school using the structure of the ‘five- rights’ (Martyn et al., 2019). This study investigated the “prevalence and types of medication errors among nurses in a hospital in northeastern Iran” (Tabatabaee et al., 2022). This study was chosen because they found that most of the orders, 76%, had no medication errors. The medication errors that were found were determined to be less than the other numerical studies (Tabatabaee et al., 2022). Using a theoretical framework to design this study, model was helped for these researchers to better understand how the variables were intertwined. References Connelly, L. M. (2014).
