Local Anesthesia for Dental Hygienist – Performing Supraperiosteal infiltration Clinical Performance Assessment Student Name: ______________________ Observer Name: _____________________ Student Number: __________________ Date: ___________ Attempt Number: __________ Instructor: Navneet Pannu RDH Introduction and Instructions – Please Read Carefully Criteria of Assessment: The Registered Dental Hygienist will re-enact the clinical outcomes of performing a supraperiosteal infiltration (injection) in a simulated clinical environment following the instructor’s demonstration using the checklist provided (please obtain two copies). The time limit to complete the assessment is 10 minutes. Observation of Assessment: Following the demonstration, students will be assigned an operatory and divided into groups of two (perform the injection to each other). Each student will take turns completing the checklist in SEQUENTIAL ORDER. Indication of performance will be documented as a Yes or No. Each student will conduct a self-assessment, and a peer assessment. Value of Assessment: Course Value = 8% All items on the checklist MUST be completed for the student to PASS the Clinical Performance Assessment. The number of attempts to successfully complete the checklist is TWO. Not completing the checklist after two attempts will result in a failure of the clinical portion of Unit One. 1. Organize health records and radiographs 2. Confirm operatory set-up 3. Address patient by first and last name upon intake: confirm identity 4. Review health history: confirm known allergies (e.g. latex) 5. Review health history: confirm special precautions (e.g. diabetes) 6. Obtain patient’s weight for anesthesia 7. Conduct maximum permissible dose 8. Ensure that patient/guardian knows what is going to happen: procedure 9. Obtain consent 10. Prepare & set up armamentarium The Intraoperative Phase 12. Put on the big and give patient eyeglasses 13. Position patient 14. Check extraoral and intraoral tissues 15. Identify injection site 16. Apply topical gel to injection site and wait for 1 minute 17. Pull tissue taut with a gauze & syringe parallel to the long axis of the tooth 18 Insert at the height of mucobuccal fold of the target tooth 19. Aspirate twice and deposit 0.6ml 20. Retract syringe & use scoop method to secure needle The Postoperative Phase
21. Give patient a rinse and suction 22. Allow time for the anesthetic to freeze 23. Test injection site with probe and verify the site is numb 24. Give post op instructions to patient 25.
