2 Describe a nursing theory/conceptual framework which correlates with your nursing philosophy and provides a foundation for your nursing practice Virginia Henderson's nursing theory Henderson described nursing as a unique duty of a professional nurse to assist individuals, whether sick or well, in performing those activities to contribute to their recovery. The theory is based on four concepts: communication, culture, bio-physiology and basic human needs. The primary role of nurses is to provide quality care to the patients and ensure that their daily needs have been met. The theory plays an important role in helping individuals acquire independence based on the performance of activities that contribute to health or the recovery process. Henderson believed that nurses should be on the frontline to assist the patient with basic functions such as eating and drinking, movement, cleanliness and care of sleep and rest if they could not handle the functions by themselves (Cardoso et al., 2019). The rationale for selecting Henderson's nursing theory Henderson's nursing theory is important in decision-making and critical thinking. As a professional nurse, it will play an important role in helping me prioritize patient care and ensure the patients can get the best services while being attended to. Psychiatric patients' suffers the most due to their mental conditions and cannot enjoy such services when they visit healthcare facilities ( Ribeiro et al., 2018). The major concern for psychiatric nurses in ensuring care for psychiatric patients as many of them are at risk of harm. Henderson's nursing theory will prioritize stabilizing the patient first to ensure that the patient is served better. When the patient is stable and no longer at risk for harm, as a psychiatric nurse, I will be able to help them and ensure they can meet their basic functions and gain their independence. Henderson's theory provides a clear rationale for achieving these goals ( Helou et al., 2022).
