with patients as unique human beings —because they share the experience of being human. Self-awareness allows nurses to self-check any biases that might prevent the development of an authentic personal connection with a patient, as well as to empathetically understand what is happening. Nurses may not always be able to define why they intuitively believe something is true, but they trust this knowledge. Because nurses learn to develop experiential knowledge of their own responses in previous clinical situations, this way of knowing can provide a better interpretation of difficult health situations. » Aesthetic ways of knowing link the humanistic components of care with their scientific application. This way of knowing represents a deeper appreciation of the whole person or situation, a moving beyond the superficial to see the experience as part of a larger whole. Aesthetic ways of knowing enable nurses to experientially relate to the fear behind a patient’s angry response, the courage of a patient with stage four cancer offering her suffering up for her classmates, or the pain of a father cutting off funds for a drug addicted son. By including aesthetic ways of knowing, the unseen parts of the story, allow everyone, including the patient, to learn new information. e Ethical ways of knowing refer to principled care, which nurses experience when they confront the moral aspects of nursing care (Porter et al., 2011). Ethical ways of knowing refer to knowledge of what is right and wrong, attention to professional standards and codes in making moral choices, taking responsibility for one’s actions, and protecting patient autonomy and rights. Carnago and Mast (2015) note, “To make an ethical decision, the nurse must consider the clinical situation, be aware of personal beliefs and values, and determine how to apply ethical and moral principles to the situation” (p. 389).
