2 Ethical Drift The current healthcare environment is characterized by various challenges, especially when dealing with an issue relating to ethics. When such happens, an ethical drift will occur, which can be defined as a sudden increase in the deviation from ethical practice that, in most cases, will go unnoticed by those who will justify the deviations as acceptable (Bourke et al., 2021). In simple terms, ethical drift is an ongoing process in healthcare and characterized by selecting a lesser of two evils (Houston & Ogbeide, 2021). I have witnessed an ethical drift in my nursing practice where a patient fell off the bed and developed a fracture on the leg after being admitted to the hospital in one week. Such happened despite the nurse in charge being informed of the increasing light in the ward and having wheelchairs to support the patients who may be weak when getting out of their beds. The fracture that the patient got from falling made her unable to move. When the nurse in charge was brought to the attention of such an incident, she only advised the nurse team, and I was part of it, to ensure that the part concerned with lighting and other support measures in the ward was left out. Therefore, I had to choose to run along with such unethical practices for fear of losing my job. In the future, when I encounter an ethical drift, I will always respect my professional practice and the oath of nursing care to observe the ethical guidelines in practice. I will always take responsibility whenever the need arises. I see no reason to compromise with my ethical principles to protect the other colleague who is careless on their job. Patient safety is my responsibility; any issue will affect the whole reputation of the organization.
