Arizona is a Full Practice State, all licensure/credentialing is processed by the Arizona State Board of Nursing (AzBN.gov). Arizona requires an unencumbered RN license, a letter of program completion from an accredited school, official transcripts, and results from the national board certification (ANCC) (AzBN, 2023). You may start this process while waiting to complete the national board testing, however, you must submit a letter from the testing agency that you are eligible to take the exam. Prescribing and dispensing authority is additional and requires verification of three semester hours of pharmacology courses within the last three years. The fees are $150 for initial certification and $150 for prescribing and dispensing. In order to prescribe controlled substances in Arizona, the APRN must have a valid DEA number and register with the Controlled Substance PMP - AZ Board of Pharmacy. A DEA application, Form 224 for new mid-level practitioners, is submitted online through the DEA: Diversion Control Division (DEA, n.d.). DEA licensing allows for dispensing Schedule II-V in Arizona for practitioners which is valid for three years and costs $888. Arizona has a Scope of Practice committee that meets eight times per year to review and revise state statutes. The Arizona Advisory Opinion lists the following as the scope of practice for APRNs: Examine a patient and establish a medical diagnosis by the client's history, physical examination, and other criteria; For a patient who requires the services of a healthcare facility: Admit the patient to the facility Manage the care the patient receives in the facility, and Discharge the patient from the facility; Order and interpret laboratory, radiographic, and other diagnostic tests, and perform those tests that the RNP is qualified to perform; Identify, develop, implement, and evaluate a plan of care for a patient to promote maintain, and restore health; Perform therapeutic procedures that the RNP is qualified to perform; Prescribe treatments; If authorized under R4-19-511, prescribe and dispense drugs and devices; and Perform additional acts that the RNP is qualified to perform (AzBN, 2021). There are not many barriers for practitioners in my state because of the full practice authority. I was aware there would be many fees associated with this process, however, I was slightly surprised by the cost of the DEA license. Additionally, I did not know that I could obtain a temporary license from the state while I wait to test as long as I have all the proper documentation. It was slightly difficult to navigate the state website to find the specific scope of practice information and some of the most pertinent aspects were found in separate areas.
