Research question: Does the implementation of a delirium-screening tool, like the confusion assessment method for the intensive care unit (CAM-ICU), enhance the nurse's effectiveness in identifying and managing delirium, consequently leading to a decrease in the occurrence of delirium among the specific ICU population? Problem Statement and Research Purpose. Delirium is a common and frequently misdiagnosed problem presenting an overwhelming challenges to the nurses in the intensive care unit (ICU). The failure of nurses to recognize delirium in its early stages can be attributed to their lack of knowledge about risk factors, screening, and interventions related to delirium (Baker, Taggart, Nivens, & Tillman, 2020). While research has shown that delirium frequently occurs in older hospitalized patients, there is evidence that early recognition and management of delirium can reduce the effects of harmful sequelae connected to delirium (Kukreja, Günther, & Popp, 2018). There are a number of tools utilized in nursing to help identify delirium. The Intensive Care Delirium Screening checklist (ICDSC) and the Confusion Assessment Method for ICU ((CAM-ICU) are two widely used deliriumscreening tools. The purpose of the present study is to determine if the implementation of the CAM-ICU delirium-screening tool is effective in the early detection, treatment, and prevention of delirium P= Adult ICU patients I= Assessing mental status by using a delirium-screening tool C= Use of the CAM-ICU tool versus ICDSC and clinician judgment O= More effective in the identification and management of delirium in order to improve patient outcome T= Intervention /assessment completed at any point in the course of ICU stay.
