Drawing blood was Kara’s favorite skill she learned in clinical medical assistant school. She is pleased that Greenland Family Care Clinic draws lab work onsite rather than sending patients to an outpatient laboratory for phlebotomy procedures. Lindsay reviewed all of the procedures with her before she left on vacation, knowing that Kara would have the opportunity to perform phlebotomy on several patients. Dr. Dean has ordered lab tests on Mr. Jose M. Garcia, and Kara will need to draw his blood. This is her first “real” patient since completing her externship and she is a little nervous. Kara looks at the lab requisition form and learns Dr. Dean has ordered a CBC with Diff, Serum Fasting Glucose, and Basic Metabolic Panel. Kara gathers supplies and enters Mr. Garcia’s exam room with a smile. What are the appropriate color of tube(s) Kara needs to draw? What is the first priority action Kara should take upon entering Mr. Garcia’s exam room? What question (specific to the ordered tests) should Kara ask Mr. Garcia prior to specimen collection? After obtaining the blood specimen(s), what information is necessary for Kara to write on the tube label? What would you have done if this was your patient? CBC w/ Diff- Lavender top tube (EDTA) Serum fasting glucose- Red top Basic Metabolic Panel- Tiger top tube is preferred (Gel-barrier) Confirming the patient’s name and date of birth Tiger top (Basic Metabolic Panel), Red top (Serum fasting glucose), Lavender (CBC w/ diff) The appropriate colors of tubes that Kara needs to draw are Lavender top tube for the CBC with differential, Red top tube for Serum Fasting Glucose, and Tiger top tube for the Basic Metabolic Panel. Before she performs the ordered tests, she needs to confirm the patient’s name and date of birth. The correct order of the test are Basic Metabolic Panel, Serum Fasting Glucose, and then the CBC with differential. On each tube, Kara needs to include a label with the patient’s information which could be the patient’s name and date of birth or the patient’s identification number and a match requisition order. If I was in Kara’s position, I would go in the room and identify myself to the patient with confidence so they don’t think I can’t do my job. I would then confirm their identity before I then explain what procedures we will be doing and what the purpose of the tests are.
