Mapping Terminologies: SNOMED-CT
Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms, commonly known as SNOMED
CT®, is the most comprehensive, multilingual clinical terminology in the world, encompassing
more than 300,000 concepts, along with terms, synonyms, and definitions for human and non-
human concepts (Dale Davidson Mary Rawson, 2022). SNOMED-CT is commonly used to code
for diagnoses and symptoms, it also codes for other clinical data, such as signs and symptoms
and diagnostic. SNOMED-CT consists of three core component types which are concepts,
descriptions, and relationships. These three components can be arranged accordingly to meet any
organization's primary and secondary needs. A distinctive clinical meaning represents the first
component, concept. Identified by numeric machine identifiers. There are two descriptions to
represent each concept. There are several benefits of SNOMED-CT including coding
efficiency,
accuracy, productivity, high quality healthcare content, etc.
SNOMED-CT makes coding easier and more effective by providing accurate information. It
also eliminates the time it takes to double check information’s accuracy. By producing high
quality content SOMED- CT is clear to understand. SOMED- CT is not just a benefit to
healthcare staff, but also to patients (also benefits patient’s safety.).
The purpose of SNOMED-CT is to provide the best and most effective method for medical
terminology to be communicated within the world market. From a financial standpoint this is
also important because of minimizing errors in the EMR. These are just a few examples to
explain why and how SOMED- CT is beneficial.
There are many requirements which must be met before EMR records can be effective, and
SOMED-CT answers this problem. Electronic health records help improve patient and physician

communication and allow for relevant information. Contrary to popular belief, using the
terminology isn't the way to benefit an organization.
Clinical terminology must be utilized with
an application. A classification has rules and standards to be followed when assigning codes, and
often has an index directing to the correct code assignment. Classifications are used for statistics,
epidemiology, audit, planning, financial billing and other use cases where amalgamated data is
required. ICD-10 and ICPC are classifications as they have the characteristics noted above
(SNOMED International, 2020).
Terminology is a set of terms representing the system of concepts in a particular field. SNOMED
CT is an international clinical reference terminology designed for use in electronic health records
and other electronic health recordings. SNOMED CT is a structured list of health terms (known
as concepts) that have definitions and relationships. Unlike a classification, a terminology allows
the clinician to use natural medical vocabulary, and defining relationships such as the position in
the SNOMED CT tree hierarchy determine the meaning. Compared to a classification, where
elements are grouped into limited categories, SNOMED CT is large and comprehensive but can
be broken down into specialty reference sets. Use of SNOMED CT in an electronic health record
structures health data that may then be converted into meaningful information and manipulated
automatically. SNOMED CT terms can be linked by mapping to classifications like ICD-10 and
ICPC (SNOMED International, 2020)
