Finding ways to better our success in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest

Segment 1
A public health crisis affecting every corner of America is out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. In 2022, OHCA was recorded in more than 365,000 people in the U.S. with a 90% fatality rate according to the sudden cardiac arrest foundation (
Mary M. Newman, Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation)
. That means just about 10% are being discharged to
live a normal or semi normal life with or without complications afterwards. Miramar is not
immune to this issue and our population is growing. With such a large incidence of occurrences and with our advanced trained paramedics and advanced technology, why is the fatality rate so high? Are there ways that we can help the outcomes of OHCA with
our citizens? Although 65% of Americans say they have had CPR training at some point
in their life, only 18% of Americans are up to date on their training according to Harvard health. Cardiac arrest affects all people young and old. As with any problem, we must dissect it before solutions can be applied properly in the most efficient manner. Miramar Fire Department is beginning to focus its efforts on proactive methods of community outreach. We need to take a stance and do our part to help limit the lack of training in the common lay person so we can help improve victim survivability. Miramar Fire Department can take a starting approach by introducing CPR/first aid training exposure early on and making it part of the school curriculum. This is a unique way to help start the educational foundation of CPR and first aid.
3
Employers can also help offer incentives with programs that offer free training to interested employees. It is our duty to go beyond and adapt from the old ways of reactive training and start being more proactive. Failure to make a move now will only lead to further loss of life, disability or lack of public confidence due to poor community outreach and training opportunities. Segment 2
