CASE STUDY
You are responsible for showing the new staff member around the office. Nancy has been
in dentistry for 14 years and is familiar with her role as a professional clinical dental
assistant. She has conveyed to you that she really likes the design and setup of the
dental office, and is excited about adding her personal touches with the goal of making
the office more functional.
1. Why would you need to show Nancy the office, since she has been dental
assistant for so long?
As the person in charge of introducing new employees, I'd like to help Nancy feel at ease
with her coworkers and the work environment. I'll schedule time to show the new
employee around, and this won't be considered a disruption in my day, but rather an
investment in a new employee. I will also ask about the design that she thinks of, that can
make the office more functional.
2.
Your office has four dental treatment areas with three full-time dental assistants
and one dental hygienist. Describe how each member can incorporate a personal
touch and still maintain a professional setting.
The dental assistants could have a set so everyone in the dental office is on the
same page.
3. What types of items can be placed in the dental office to show a team-type
atmosphere?
To lighten the mood one could play some tunes the patient and staff would like.
4. How would you feel about a new employee wanting to make changes so
quickly?
Any type of feedback should be listened to and at least be discussed by the team.
A new voice can bring much-needed improvement that we fail to realize due to
familiarity
5. Nancy has requested that the temperature be turned up in the clinical area
because she is “cold-natured” and does not want to have to wear multiple layers
of clothing to stay warm. How should the office manager handle this concern?
Why is the temperature set differently throughout the office
In the reception area, it'll be about 72 degrees, maybe we can raise it to 75
degrees if we're slow and we don't have a lot of traffic in the office. In the clinical
area, the highest we can go is 70. The office manager would have to stress that
and say she would at least need a sweater for when she's back there instead of
the reception area.
