National Patient Safety Goals
Interventions

Check wristband, ask for patient name and DOB
Use medicines safely
Ensure all medications are labeled, document every
Use alarms safely
Make sure the equipment is working properly and the sounds are heard when used
Prevent infection
Use PPE and proper hand hygiene
Identify patient safety risks
Reduce risk for suicide
Prevent mistakes in surgery
Ensure the proper procedure is done on the correct location, keep patient in proper position after surgery, and
observe operation to make sure surgery is done properly
Critical Thinking Assignment:
Create a list of five possible hospital safety hazards. Think about your own experiences and conversations with healthcare personnel to identify safety risks for both nurses and patients. What could you do to minimize these risks?
1.
Patient is incontinent and soiled themselves and some of it is on the floor by the bed
-Clean the floor and after hand hygiene give the patient a bath/bed bathe depending on patient status
2. Patients bed is left in high positions
-lower bed to comfortable and safe position
3. Patient is post-op and call button is left hanging behind the bed
-ensure the call light is on and working, then leave it within arms reach of the patient
4. Patient is on bed restriction and is trying to get out of bed -inform the patient of the bed restriction to ensure their safety and ask them if there is anything you can
help them with
5. Patient is showing signs of possible MRSA -document concerns and get sample of wound for testing. Follow contact-transmission protocol
