Health Care Research Methods, Analysis, and Utilization Topic 1 DQ 1 Describe the elements that make up the scientific method. Discuss why health care adopted the scientific method in the early 1900s. Compare the advantages this approach had over prior approaches in the past to treating patients. Provide a recent example of the benefits of successfully applying the scientific method. Also provide an example of when the scientific method was not applied and the consequences. Support your discussion with scholarly references. According to Schultz (2024) generally, there are six steps in the scientific method Observation and questioning of why something appears to be or occur, Research and study of prior work, Inductive proposal of a hypothesis, Testing of deductions from the hypothesis, Analysis of the data from the testing, and Reporting with refinement, refutation, or support of the hypothesis. Health care adopted the scientific method in the early 1900s due to the use of improvement in science, practitioners may more successfully design, carry out, assess, and integrate novel techniques into their daily work. Making better use of scarce resources is facilitated by organizing improvement projects around three main empirical issues and using the scientific method to answer them. The scientific method is a logic-based approach to addressing problems. This approach is widely used by nurses and other healthcare professionals to address clinical issues. There are seven phases involved in this process: observation, data collection, hypothesis formulation, prediction, hypothesis testing, assessment, and conclusion. For most of the 19th century, traditional medicine focused on symptomatic therapy, which mostly involved blistering, bloodletting, and large doses of mineral poisons. Patients who were unfortunate enough to receive therapy had a significant fatality rate as a result of these medicinal regimens (Fokunang et al., 2011). To cure, diagnose, and prevent illnesses or preserve well-being, traditional medicine refers to health practices, methods, knowledge, and beliefs that include manual treatments and exercises, spiritual therapies, and medicines derived from plants, animals, and minerals. These practices can be used alone or in combination. According to Takács & Ihász (2023). The COVID-19 epidemic has presented society with hitherto unheard-of difficulties. The younger generation is the most susceptible to mental health issues during this epidemic, according to newly available statistics. To identify a group of teenagers and young people who are at risk for mental health problems, the current study looked at how changes in health habits affect these issues. Hungary's secondary school students, aged 15 to 21, took part in cross- sectional research. A self-assessment tool was created to gauge the modifications in health-related practices. The 20-item UCLA Loneliness Scale and the Beck Hopelessness Scale were used to evaluate mental health issues. Finally, they found
that spending less time in front of the screening in the evening was associated with moderate/severe hopelessness and/or high loneliness. However, without a systematic approach to doing scientific research, advancement would probably be slower and more frequently derailed by novel concepts that would have turned out to be unproductive.
