For your discussion this week, tell us the public health issue and the community you are
considering using for your Portfolio Project.
In your post, discuss your public health idea. Incorporate at least two references from a newspaper, trade magazine, website, or peer-reviewed journal that speak to the public health issue you have selected. One reference must speak about the specific public health problem in the community you have selected to examine. The second reference must offer up a potential solution to the type of public health issue you have identified (it does not need to refer to your specific issue in the community you are working on).
Discuss any ethical, moral, or political responsibility, as described in Chapters 1 and 2 of
Public Health Ethics
, that you feel your community has to address.

The Public health issue I have chosen to address in my community is homelessness which is prevalent even in the rural areas of Colorado where I reside. It is an issue of morality, economics, and politics.
A system which divides issues into that of a veteran, mentally ill, domestic violence victims, and youth homelessness is not efficient in reducing the number of chronic homelessness or even addressing underlying issues. Mainly affordable housing, Health and Human services in the way of mental health and other services such as child care, Transportation, and case management to help guide families and individuals alike to a more stable life. Lastly, creating a social network for those who are experiencing homelessness is also of the utmost importance. All of this takes money and political backing to achieve and we as a society have not been able to vote in the kind of change
we need or dispel the stigma attached to being homeless (
Kondratas,1991).
In short what is needed to end Homelessness is homes, affordable homes. We seem to work backwards in this country we say once you have an education, good credit, good job than we will give you a home. Sometimes starting with the home the other things fall
into place. Currently a fairly new approach has emerged and is known as ‘Housing First’
which now services Finland, France, Ireland, Netherlands and US. Strategies being implements actually show a reduce cost to tax payers when implementing a Housing first idealogy to the Homeless crisis that reaches every corner of the world (
Pleace, and Bretherton,2012)
