This discussion post focuses on patient and family teaching
Case:
A 6-year-old female with a history of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. She had a above the knee amputation 4 weeks ago. She was readmiited 7 days ago with cellulitis of the right stump. she said that she was not aware that she was having an infection- "it just hurts and and I wasnt feeling well". Treatments include wet to dry dressings of the right lower extremity, saline lock in between IV antibiotics, and fluid restrictions.
Her orders include insulin on a sliding scale. The plan is to discharge her home after
her IV antibiotics have been completed after 10 days.
Discussion Task:
1.
Identify 3 teaching opportunities (what you need to teach).
-
Describe signs and symptoms of wound infection to the patient and teach her how to assess her feet precisely to recognize infection signs early
-
Teach how to manage her blood glucose level using the sliding scale of insulin and also her diet
-
Teach wound care 2.
Choose 1 of the above 3 teaching topics and develop a teaching goal. Clearly identify which teaching topic for the goal.
I would choose the “wound care” teaching topic:
Goal: By the end of the teaching, the patient/family will be able to perform return demonstration of wound cleansing and change dressing.
