One of the most critical healthcare problems facing the US healthcare system and its citizens is the opioid crisis. Opioids are typically utilized in healthcare systems to treat both acute
and chronic pain. Opioids help treat and manage pain when used correctly; otherwise, prolonged exposure to opioids creates the potential for long-term abuse and misuse, which can cause patients who are prescribed opioids to become addicted and divert the painkillers to unapproved users.(Stoicea et al., 2019). The opioid epidemic is caused by several causes, including the use of
many providers, the overprescription of opioid painkillers, the use of illegal opioids like heroin, and the rising incidence of synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl. Addiction to opioids or other drugs has an impact on the health of individuals as well as the economy, society, community, and
healthcare system. Based on a comparison of the data, drug overdose deaths are rising annually. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that in 2021, there were 106,699 drug overdose deaths in the US, a 20% increase from 2020. (CDC Injury Center, n.d.). Therefore, this crucial healthcare problem needs to be on the legislative agenda. To stop the opioid epidemic in the healthcare system, every American administration is essential. The administration is taking various actions to avoid and manage the opioid crisis. To address it, for instance, the Trump administration has established an opioid task force, declared a public health emergency, and extended treatment access. To lower the amount of opioid prescriptions written, the Trump administration worked with pharmaceutical companies. The government also provided funding to expand access to medication-assisted therapy and raise the availability of the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone. By enforcing strict legal penalties for drug trafficking and limiting the illegal importation of opioids, the administration also attempted to reduce the supply of opioids. To combat the opioid crisis, the Trump administration provided
state and local governments with funding totaling more than $1 billion (White House, 2018)
Preventing and managing the opioid crisis is a significant priority for the Biden administration. Many lives are being saved, and drug overdoses are being reduced thanks to the audacious strategy implemented by the Biden administration. Expanding access to evidence-
based treatment, advancing racial equity issues in the drug policy approach, enhancing evidence-
based harm reduction efforts, supporting evidence-based prevention efforts to reduce youth substance use, cutting the supply of illicit substances, advancing recovery-ready workplaces, growing the addiction workforce, and expanding access to recovery support services are the top priorities of the Biden administration's strategy for addressing the opioid epidemic. (Biden-
Harris Administration, 2023). The White House, 2023 reports that Biden presented Congress with his budget request 2024, which seeks for a historic $46.1 billion (about $140 per person in the US) to be invested in a national drug control programme. The National Drug Control approach's hand-in-hand coordination approach has helped to minimize and control opioid-
related health issues in the American populace
Part 2: Agenda Comparison Grid Analysis
The primary agency in charge of handling the opioid crisis problem would be the Department of Health and Human Services. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have all had active roles in this largest federal department
agency. HHS also prioritizes mitigating the risks and consequences associated with opioid use. Funds are provided to states and territories through the HHS agency grant programs to facilitate treatment for drug use disorders and increase the number of persons who have access to recovery
support services. Additionally, the funds will let states enhance their investments in peer support experts in emergency rooms, overdose education, and other programs aimed at saving lives in communities affected severely. (White House, 2022).HHS Provides Grant Funding Totaling $47.8 Million to Initiatives Increasing Access to Opioid Use Disorder Medications, Prevention, Treatment, Recovery Assistance, and Harm Reduction (HHS, 2023)
As a licensed healthcare practitioner, I believe there are several reasons why this kind of healthcare issue should be on the presidential agenda. A president's administration may become aware of and include the public health problem, health-related research, healthcare organizations,
professional recommendations, public media, political figures, and public pressure to address them on their agenda.
Once a topic is on the presidential agenda, it can remain there through implementing policies, monitoring and assessment by the public and stakeholders, resource allocation, legislation, and advocacy. Maintain open contact channels with the general public, health professionals, advocacy groups, and other relevant parties. You may make sure the issue is remembered and that various points of view are taken into account when making choices by including these groups.
To solve the opioid epidemic, I recommend Vice President Kamala Harish as an entrepreneur, sponsor, and promoter. She has been giving excellent assistance in minimizing and managing the problem. Her administration established the plan by offering exceptional care, minimizing damage, offering rehabilitation assistance, and limiting illicit medicines' availability. Additionally, she is essential to passing the funding to agencies overseeing the national drug programme. She has pushed for increased financing to increase studies on drug-related problems.

In the United States, one of the most critical and complicated public health problems is the opioid crisis. The opioid pandemic in our society impacts people of all ages, colors, and genders. Opioids can cause euphoria, sleepiness, and breathing issues when used over an extended period. The primary effect is on public health; the susceptible demographic has been impacted by the abuse and addiction to opioids, which can result in overdoses and fatalities. A healthy society's foundation is being destroyed along with the family. The health problems caused by opioids are costing our nation money. The abuse of pharmaceutical drugs further complicates the problem. The opioid crisis should be on the legislative agenda because it is a problem that affects everyone and is difficult for one person to solve. The government can reduce
and control this problem if it is put on the legislative agenda. Effective management and well-
allocated resources from the administration can be essential in preventing and lessening the opioid crisis problem.
Even if they don't directly influence legislation, nurses can influence agenda-setting by speaking up for patients' needs through speaking with others, joining other organizations, offering education, etc. Since they often have the first interaction and spend longer time with patients, nurses can play a big part in the early detection and prevention of opioid misuse and abuse. Nurses can create new guidelines on how to manage pain and promote the adoption of suitable policies and techniques Compose protocols for treating opioid addiction in freed criminals and prescribe opioids. They can be of assistance by keeping an eye on patients' prescriptions. To comprehend the patient's demands, nurses can assist by gathering information
and working with various teams. They can also take part in campaigns to raise awareness of the difficulties and complexities associated with opioid problems.
