Case Study Example for HLPR 2010 Purpose: This example is to provide students with more context to complete the first part of the discussion boards. The example below reflects how this answer addresses each criterion for part one. Part two is the response to peer’s posts, which is self-explanatory (See rubric guidelines in syllabus). Additionally, please review the case study rubric to see how points are dispersed between an excellent discussion, good discussion, and poor discussion. Case Study for Chapter 2 (pg 49): “Public health workers are offering free measles vaccinations to children. The worker is speaking with parents of a child and explaining why the vaccination is important. The parents express concerns that the vaccine will interfere with God’s plan, and they refuse to have a child vaccinated. Consider these related questions: 1. What are the parent’s beliefs about how health is maintained? Answer: According to the content in Chapter 2, the parent’s beliefs are aligned with the personalistic belief system. With this belief system, individuals believe that a person’s health is related to their actions or violations against spiritual or religious norms. [According to Carteret (2011), many cultural groups (e.g., Native Americans and people from Latin America and Asia) have these belief systems. This also means that personalistic belief systems around the world are not all based on the same concepts[. For example, one group may practice voodoo, whereas others may believe in many /[Commented [JB1]: Identify (1 of 2) points from the deities or may be monotheistic (believing in one god). week's material 2. How do the theories of health and lliness discussed in this chapter apply to this case study? Answer: b\s noted in the textbook, Carteret (2011) states that for many families with spiritual/religious views can have a disconnect to modern medicine that can affect how people seek, accept, delay, or reject medical treatment. As with the Commented [JB2]: Identify (2 Of 2) points from the family in this case study, the parents are worried how the vaccine would anger God’s plan and refused to have their week’s material child vaccinated. [I can relate to this as | was raised as a Catholic. In my childhood, prayer was important, especially during iliness. Also, as | continued my education in the health professions, | was able to blend my religious beliefs with medical research.[ Commented [JB3]: Related the content to personal experiences 3. Using the Purnell Model for cultural competence, what approach, if any, should the public health workers take to help protect the child by assisting the parents with understanding the need for the vaccinations? Answer: This is not an easy question, which makes sense since cultural views is not a “one size fits all”. | do feel that the health care workers could have approached this family a better way if they were aware of the family’s belief system. With the Purnell model, the health care workers should have asked if the parents felt comfortable with this option of treatment (spirituality) and by doing so they would have acknowledged different religious beliefs as it connects to vaccines {Health Care Practitioners). It seemed that the heath care workers were only identifying with the biomedical medicine. h'his brought me back to the fidea of health disparities that was discussed in chapter one. | wonder if the family /[Commented [JBA]: Critical analysis of content felt social isolated and maybe not valued for their belief system. It also seems that the health care workers may have been in violation of the CLAS standards that were discussed in chapter one; these standards are there to help build a better understanding with culturally and linguistically appropriate Services.l Commented [JB5]: Relate content to what you have already learned in the course to date
