ICD-10-CM is an arrangement of classes or groups of diagnoses and procedures by system division. ICD- 10-CM stands for Internal Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification. Symbols are used in ICD-10-CM. The point dash symbol (-) tells the coder that the code contains a list of options at a level of specificity past the three-character category. General coding guidelines apply to the selection of ICD-10-CM diagnostic codes. Coding guidelines number 4, signs and systems are codes that describe symptoms and signs for reporting purposes when a related definitive diagnosis has not been established by the provider. “Chapter 18 of ICD-10-CM, Symptoms, Signs, and Abnormal Clinical and Laboratory Findings, Not Elsewhere Classified (codes R00.0–R99) contains many, but not all codes for symptoms.” Resources: Bowie, M.
