As a nurse our approach to medicine is ever changing as patient care evolves over time.
The
integrative approach to medicine that combines regular or conventional medicine we are used to
with complementary and alternative medicine is assisting us in overall patient care.
Conventional medicine works well but, in our field, we are ever striving to seek out new
knowledge that may have been underutilized or not utilized at all.
This includes areas such as
medical massage, acupuncture, or even beverages such as green tea. Nurses need to remember
that these are used in conjunction with traditional medicine and are not stand alone in care
planning/implementation.
We cannot forget to utilize best practice, standard therapy, and
standard care in along with traditional methods.
Nurses should advise patients of types of care that may assist them in a reduction of symptoms
and that standard care practices are proven to work.
Patients should be reminded that evidence-
based practice is integral into their healthcare, along with additional therapies that may benefit.
What we want to make sure to do is warn patients of the problems associated with this
alternative care in conjunction with benefits.
An example can be a patient who just had knee
replacement surgery, and you would not advise them to start doing yoga a week post-surgery.
The alternative therapies are to help conventional medicine and not replace it.
Supplements are
another way you can advise patients who may not be eating a balanced diet to get all the vitamins
their body needs.
Conventional medicine and CAM can go hand in hand together, but we need to integrate them in
a way to not reduce the effectiveness of their conventional care plan.
I use box breathing with
my patients who are stressed before surgery to slow their heart rate rather than asking for a
medication as many times this works to slow their heart rate/anxiety levels. It is important to be
familiar with CAM because 38% of adults and 12% of children in the United States use some
form of CAM (Cherry & Jacob, 2017, p.204). Patients are not all the same and will require
different plans that are specific to them.
There is no blanket scenario with correct answers, but
there is guidance you can give them outside of conventional medicine.
Meditation is another
low-risk mental stabilizing alternative therapy that can be done in a traditional setting.
Having
patients take time to relax allows their body to rest even in short increments to assist in recovery.
