In response to two peers, address the following:
Compare your analysis of the case to your peers' viewpoints. In places where you
disagree, offer a competing understanding of where the priorities lie. In areas where you
agree, add additional evidence to support the consensus.
Compare your disciplinary perspective to that of your peers. If you are coming from the
same discipline, in what ways was your analysis similar? If you are informed by different
disciplines, how do your perspectives diverge?
Hi Martin,
Qi therapy was very interesting to learn about during this discussion. Understanding what
complementary and integrative health (CIH) is helps to bring a different perspective of medicine
to individuals where modern medicine cannot. Since traditional Chinese medicine has been
around for over thousands of years, it’s no wonder that qi therapy has shown improvement in
“muscle strength, balance, functional ability, depression, anxiety, spiritual well-being, and
quality of life” (Chang & Knobf, 2019). In Jane’s case, she has cancer and though there is no
scientific evidence that it can cure cancer, qi therapy definitely can relieve some of the symptoms
that come along with it.
The influence of politics, economics, culture, and religion on the use of CIH is different across
the globe. As you’ve stated, a person who has universal healthcare could receive CIH, but in the
United States, that method of medicine may not be covered under their insurance and they would
have to pay out of pocket. When it comes to the economy, Holtz states “the widespread use of
traditional medicine and CIH in developing countries partly reflects the impact of each country’s
economy…because traditional and herbal medicines are less expensive and more widely
accessible than Western medicine” (2022). Culture and religion seem to be the strongest
influences on the use of CIH since it has been around for centuries and many of those countries
continue to practice what they have known to work. Though there may not be any scientific
evidence that states CIH methods work to cure cancer or other types of problems, but there is
evidence that it can help with the symptoms. According to Holtz, “traditional Chinese medical
care and practices are strongly influenced by Chinese tradition and religion” (2022). This is
because generations of families continue to practice what they have believed for thousands of
years. With influencing a patient to use CIH, focusing on their care is definitely important.

Hi Akesha,
It’s quite interesting to learn that complementary and integrative health (CIH) can improve
symptoms that the body may have due to a medical problem. In Jane’s case, her symptoms
reduced with the use of qi therapy. According to Chang and Knobf, qi therapy has “great
potential in cancer care for improving physical ability, reducing cancer-related fatigue, and
enhancing the quality of life and spiritual well-being” (2019). Though CIH methods have been
linked to reduce the symptoms of cancer and other health related problems, it doesn’t cure it. It is
a great practice to use when other types of medicine don’t work to allow the patient to have
better quality of life.
When it comes to CIH, there are many factors that influence it. Politics, economy, culture, and
religion all play their part in influencing the use of CIH. The government in the United States has
supported the practice of CIH by allowing the “NCCIH to explore CIH practices in the context of
rigorous science, training of CIH researchers, and dissemination of authoritative information to
the public and professionals” (Holtz, 2022). Since you stated that there is a lack of information to
the public and healthcare professionals, this allows them to further their knowledge on this type
of medicine and allow patients to choose a health option that best fits their needs. I do believe the
economy can make it difficult depending on where a person lives. Some countries use mostly
traditional medicines and CIH practices; however, in some places only modern western medicine
is covered and CIH methods would have to be paid out of pocket. This makes it difficult for
patients who could use CIH to help alleviate some of their symptoms. The biggest influences on
the use of CIH are culture and religion. Most countries who use CIH practices more frequently
base their knowledge of CIH on their traditions, culture, and their religion from thousands of
years ago. As you’ve stated it could have a positive or negative impact on someone depending on
their beliefs, but given the opportunity to see the results of what it can accomplish can help show
what CIH can really do for a patient.
