QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH STUDY CRITIQUE Whitney Chester School of Social Work, Walden University SOCW 6301: Social Work Practice Research I Dr. Tiffany Wells July 16, 2023
Quantitative Research Study Critique As many may know from simple observance in today’s society, homelessness is major issue in the United States. For my research study critique, I chose to stick with the topic of homelessness. The study I chose to critique focuses on the mental and financial health of veterans who may have experienced homelessness during the pandemic. As we know the Covid- 19 pandemic effected a lot of vulnerable populations, one of those being veterans. This particular study studied data from 158 participants consisting of veterans with mental disorders, veterans who recently received housing, and a control group of veterans who were assessed 5 times between 2020 and 2021. The study examined financial health and psychiatric symptoms (Tsai et. al., 2023). Title and Authors The article used for this critique is “Financial Health and Psychiatric Symptoms Among Veterans with Psychosis or Recent Homelessness during the Covid-19 Pandemic” by Jack Tsai, Amanda McCleery, Jonathan Wynn, and Michael Green. Before reading the article, the reader knows exactly what the study focuses on because the title is very concise and straight to the point. The lead researcher on this study, Jack Tsai, has dedicated the past ten years of his career on addressing homelessness in the veteran community and has published over 200 peer reviewed articles focused on homelessness, mental illness, and trauma. Amanda McCleery is an assistant professor at University of Iowa in the area of Psychological and Brain Sciences. Jonathan Wynn is the department chair of the Sociology department at the University of
Massachusetts and has written numerous books. Lastly, Michael Green is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Bio behavioral Sciences at the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He also is the Director of the Treatment Unit of the Department of Veteran Affairs VISN 22 Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC). Literature Review In Tsai, et. al.’s (2023) article reviewing their case study on financial health and psychosis symptoms amongst homeless veterans during the pandemic, data was gathered from three different groups of veterans to measure the impact of Covid-19 on veterans in the Los Angeles area from May 2020- July 2021. The three groups that were used were: veterans with psychotic disorders, veterans who were recently homeless, and a control group of veterans who have never experienced psychosis or homelessness. The researchers examined the number of individuals who received multiple stimulus checks among all three groups, expenses after receiving a stimulus check or multiple stimulus checks, and lastly how receiving/ not receiving a stimulus check was associated with changes in mental health. It was hypothesized that the first two groups would be less likely to receive a stimulus check and would be more likely to spend it on necessities if they did receive one. It was also hypothesized that individuals in the first two groups would be more likely to have improvements with mental health than individuals in the control group. I can agree with this hypothesis because it would be less likely for the first two groups to receive a stimulus check due to the lack of a stable address or bank account to receive it. After reviewing this study, it is clear that the researchers did not receive the outcome/results that they were expecting. It was found that there was little or no change in financial health within the two most vulnerable groups included in the study. Individuals within

the control group were found to have greater negative financial burdens than those in the other two groups. Strategy of Research In both qualitative and quantitative research a research design is used to find answers to the research question or test a hypothesis (Yegidis et. al., 2018). In this quantitative study it seems that the research design that was primarily used was explanatory research. In this study the researchers attempted to find or verify the relationship between homeless or mentally unstable veterans and how their financial health was effected during the Covid 19 pandemic. The researchers used a control group, consisting of veterans who have never experienced homelessness or mental illness, to try to prove the hypothesis. Threats to Internal Validity In quantitative research there are numerous things that can threaten a study’s internal validity. In this study the researchers chose to focus there study around a historical world event. That in itself is a threat to internal validity. Also the length of the study was almost a year long which I believe was needed for the study to produce valid results. Application to Practice Many individuals are still being affected by the pandemic when it comes to mental health. I think the results of this study can be applied to social work practice due to the fact that the results that not just people in vulnerable populations were affected by this worldwide
pandemic. It just sheds a light on what is going on in the world and how we as social workers can use our knowledge to help bridge the gap.
