Angie Bachmann is a housewife who feels alone and bored in an empty house when her daughters are both in school, and her husband is at work. She got married, became pregnant at a young age, and never pursued a career. She “settled” on being a mom. Thus, she was unhappy and had low self-confidence. Replace this text with your own summary of Bachmann’s situation, using my example above. In an interview with Duhigg, Bachman explained that she “always felt like the untalented one. . . . I think I’m smart, and I know I was a good mom. But there wasn’t a lot I could point to and say, that’s why I’m special” (246). Replace this text with your own key quotations to support your summary, using my example above. Bachman was experiencing a mid-life crisis and was unhappy in her environment. She felt like she needed some spice in her life. Bachman reminds me of my aunt. When my cousin (her daughter) went off to college, my aunt started dressing like she was 20 and left her husband for a much younger man. It was like she was addicted to being “young.” Replace this text with your own reactions/questions using my example above. Bruce Alexander’s research suggests that our environment is a major contributor to our psychological stability. Maybe Bachmann’s home environment created the right conditions that drove her to seek some spice in her life. For her, that spice was the casino and gambling. Replace this text with your own connections to addiction theories in “Rat Park,” using my example above. Slater explains: “Alexander’s research suggests that additions are in fact quite subject to free will.” When rats or humans don’t change their behavior, Slater writes, it’s “because the particular set of circumstances the mammal finds itself in offers no better alternatives than such destructive snacking” (169). Replace this text with your own key quotations to support your own connection, using my example above.
