LOBES
There are four sections of each hemisphere of the brain called lobes. Each lobe has specific
functions that it can influence and control.

Frontal-
The frontal lobe, which is located at the front of the brain, is the largest lobe of the
brain.
This lobe is responsible for motor control, emotion, reasoning and contains Broca’s area
which is essential for speech and language.
Damage to Broca’s area usually results in loss of language or great difficulty in speaking.
One of the most famous cases of frontal lobe damage is from 1848. According to UFC (n.d.)
Phineas Gage (a) was working amongst his railroad crew when an iron rod penetrated his skull
(b). Upon being injured he had blood and brain matter coming out of the wound but was
seemingly perfectly fine, he could walk and talk normally. After the removal of the rod, his
personality began changing, where he was once soft-spoken and well-mannered, he had become
the opposite. Though scientists believe the change to be true, as the rod drove through several
lobes of the brain, they are sure that the story of his changed personality was slightly embellished
over time.

Parietal-
The parietal lobe is located in the middle of the brain. This lobe is responsible for
helping to identify objects as well as understanding where your body is compared with objects
around it (spatial relationship). The parietal lobe also receives sensory input from the thalamus
and helps to interpret pain, touch, position, vibration, temperature, and pressure.
Temporal-
The temporal lobe is located on the sides of the brain. This lobe is responsible for
short-term memory, emotion, musical rhythm or sound recognition, a small portion of our smell
detection, and some speech as well. Khalid, Jawabri, and Sharma (2022) note that this area of the
brain and its exact functions are still being deeply studied to this day.
Occipital-
The occipital lobe is located at the back of the brain. The occipital lobe is responsible
for visual processing and interpretation.
