Review the topic resources related to substance use disorders and process addictions. How do process addictions differ from substance use disorders? What are three ways in which the treatment approach will vary from process addiction to substance use disorders? How will age and/or developmental stage influence the treatment approach? Substance use disorders are classified as ingestive addictions due to consuming alcohol or drugs. In contrast, process addictions are behavioral addictions that produce the same addictive effect without ingesting drugs or alcohol (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020). Examples of process addictions include gambling, technology addiction, sex addiction, shopping addiction, food addiction, and lastly, work addiction. Treatment for substance use disorders mainly consists of detox, inpatient, and then support groups that follow a 12-step program (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020). This is due to the importance of detoxing safely because if one attempts to stop consuming drugs or alcohol suddenly, they can have severe reactions. Process addictions can be challenging to treat because abstinence from one’s addictive activity may not be an option. Some treatments for process addictions include cognitive- behavioral interventions, motivational interviewing to encourage harm reduction, and self- empowerment (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020). Age may affect addiction treatment because younger clients’ treatment may have more of a focus on family counseling than older clients. This could be because teens and children are not usually in complete control of their environment and need the support of their families to identify and address behavioral patterns (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2020).
