Case Scenario 1
Your nephew cannot decide what type of physician he would like to be. He is currently in a premedical
program completing his undergraduate education. He is confused by whether he should pursue an MD
degree or a DO degree. He asked you, a healthcare administrator, to explain the difference between the
two types of medical education and make a recommendation for him.
A.
Doctor of Medicine: A “Doctor of Medicine” differs depending on the description or specifics
they want to focus on. Those who want a doctorate mainly to focus on the study of medicine.
B.
Doctor of Osteopathy: A “Doctor of Osteopathy” engage in a variety of studies medical
disciplines such as; pediatrics, emergency medicine, primary and preventive care.
C.
Similarities: Some of the similarities include writing medicine prescriptions and can work
anywhere in the US.
D.
Differences: A Doctor of Medicine is someone who has completed an accredited program as for
a Doctor of Osteopathy is someone that is qualified, licensed, and has graduated from a
osteopathic school.

What do you recommend and why? I would recommend pursuing a Doctorate Degree, it would
be far more accommodating and easier to receive and focus on. It would also benefit the
community that he would like to work in.

You are a healthcare administrator at a medical clinic. Lately, you have noticed one of the internal
medicine physicians at the clinic has been acting distant, distracted, disengaged, and depressed. You are
wondering if she is experiencing burnout or compassion fatigue. So, you decide to research the issue and
learn how you can help her and other members of your staff.

What is burnout or compassion fatigue? Burnout is a state where there is a lot of pressure that
has developed from working too much.

What kind of healthcare professionals experience burnout? Physicians, Nurses, and Doctors.
C.
What are the signs and symptoms of burnout? A sign of burnout can be a large amount of stress,
anxiousness that would prevent someone from completing a task, aggravation, depression,
coping with alcohol, and emotionally exhausted.
D.
What impact can burnout have on patient care? If someone on the medical staff are
experiencing burnout, there would be poor medical diagnosis, poor care, a lack of concern for a
patient, and staff shortage.
E.
What can be done to address and help with burnout? A cut back of hours, pressure, and
allowing accommodations for staff could allow them to feel more comfortable in their working
conditions.
