The hospital that I choose is MIDCARE. As a business analyst for MIDCARE hospital in Hillsboro County, it is crucial to understand the demographic changes and community health indicators to make strategic decisions. This analysis will focus on the five most important issues that MIDCARE will face in the next 1 - 10 years, why they should be a managerial priority, and the steps the management team should take to cope with these situations. Based on the information provided in Case 1 and other sources, the following are the four most important issues: 1. Population Aging: In table 1.3, Hillsboro County Population has increased within the five years. In the year 2024, we’re estimated that the population would be 147,400, which is 2, 632 more than 2019. Also, in Table 1.4, showing the Hillsboro County Age based on Sex in 2024, it is interesting to show the older age such as 65-74 and 75 and over have lower population. Whereas, the younger age such as 25-44 and 45-64 are the top two in Hillsboro population. As the population ages, the demand for healthcare services increases. This is due to the higher prevalence of chronic diseases and other health issues among the elderly. In Table 1.12, the table shows that the resident leading cause of death is from Diseases of the Heart as the number one as throughout from 2009 to 2024, even though it is ten deaths less than 2009. Chronic diseases are long-term conditions that can be managed but not cured, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. These diseases are more common in older people, as are other health issues such as falls, fractures, and dementia. In fact, Table 1.13, Hillsboro County Causes of Resident Death by Age in 2024 shows that residents that are 75 and over are considered as one having death in each of the leading causes of death including diseases of the heart, malignant neoplasms, etc. While resident age from 65 to 74 were second in resident death that is
from leading cause of death. As a result, older people require more healthcare services than younger people. This includes both preventive care, such as vaccinations and screenings, and treatment for acute and chronic conditions. The increasing demand for healthcare services as the population ages is a major challenge for healthcare systems around the world. 2. Increase in Chronic Diseases: With lifestyle changes and an aging population, there is an increase in chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. As I mention, in the first issues, in Table 1.12, the leading causes of resident deaths in Hillsboro County include diseases of the heart, malignant neoplasm, cerebrovascular diseases, chronic lower respiratory, etc. Table 1.9 shows that MIDCARE has the most patient days compared to other hospitals in Hillsboro County. This means that MIDCARE is the hospital that most people go to when they need medical care. The number of patient days is expected to decrease in 2024, but MIDCARE will still have more patient days than any other hospital in the county. This suggests that MIDCARE is a popular choice for residents of Hillsboro County when they need medical care. 3. Healthcare Workforce Shortage: The shortage of healthcare professionals is a growing concern, as it could have a significant impact on the quality of care that patients receive. This is especially true for nurses and doctors, who are essential to providing quality care. According to Table 1.10, Hillsboro County has a shortage of family practice doctors. MIDCARE has the most staff within Hillsboro County, but they only have five doctors/staff that serve in Family Practice. Webster Hospital has 20 doctors/staff in Family Practice, which is more than double the number of doctors/staff at MIDCARE. The same trend is seen in other specialties, such as Cardiology, Internal Medicine
General, and so on. MIDCARE has more staff in each department, but Middleboro has more staff than Jasper and other cities within the Hillsboro County. This shortage of healthcare professionals could lead to longer wait times for patients, as well as a decrease in the quality of care that they receive. It is important to address this issue in order to ensure that all patients have access to quality healthcare. 4. Healthcare Costs: The cost of healthcare is rising, making it difficult for many individuals to afford necessary care. Table 1.9, shows that although MIDCARE has more patient days than other hospitals. It also shows that MIDCARE also has more patients being discharged than other hospitals. Also, If we were to look into Table 1.6, Hillsboro County Health Insurance Profile, 2024, we see that most residents have insurance that is covered by employment-based insurance which is 51.5 percent. While residents who were either covered by Medicaid or who are not covered any time during the year were tied with the percentage of 19.5. Now, if we look into the household income based on those who were covered by employment-based insurance, 72.4 percent of those with $75,000 and over; while 61.4 percent with income of $50,000 to $74,999. However, when looking at people who received Medicaid, 43.5 percent of people who have an income of less than $25,000. While those who don’t have insurance show that people who have less than $25,000 have a percentage of 28.3, 22.8 percent of those who have $25,000 to $49,999. These issues should be a managerial priority because they directly impact the quality of care provided by the hospital and its financial sustainability. To cope with these situations, the management team should take the following steps: 1. Population Aging and Increase in Chronic Diseases: Investing in preventive care and chronic disease management programs can improve the health of the population by:

Identifying and treating health problems early Reducing costs Improving quality of life Increasing productivity Reducing strain on the healthcare system Improving public health These programs are a wise investment that can yield significant benefits for individuals, families, and communities. 2. Healthcare Workforce Shortage: The healthcare industry is facing a shortage of professionals. Possible solutions include increasing the number of training programs, offering higher salaries and benefits, making it easier for foreign-trained professionals to practice, and providing more support. It is also important to create a positive work environment for healthcare professionals. 3. Healthcare Costs: The following are some of the ways to implement cost-saving measures: Negotiating lower prices with suppliers: This can be done by comparing prices from different suppliers, asking for discounts, and negotiating long-term contracts. Reducing energy consumption: This can be done by turning off lights when not in use, unplugging electronics when not in use, and using energy-efficient appliances. Automating tasks: This can be done by using software or robots to perform tasks that are currently done manually.
Outsourcing non-core activities: This can be done by hiring a company to perform tasks that are not essential to the company's core business. Reducing travel and entertainment expenses: This can be done by using video conferencing instead of travel, and by choosing less expensive restaurants and hotels. Cutting back on unnecessary spending: This can be done by reviewing all expenses and eliminating those that are not necessary. The following are some of the ways to explore alternative funding sources: Seeking government grants or loans: This can be done by applying for grants or loans from government agencies. Raising private equity or venture capital: This can be done by selling shares in the company to private investors or venture capital firms. Partnering with other organizations: This can be done by forming partnerships with other companies or organizations to share costs and risks. Selling assets: This can be done by selling assets such as buildings, equipment, or inventory. Crowdsourcing: This can be done by raising money from a large number of people through online platforms. By addressing these issues proactively, MIDCARE can ensure it continues to provide high- quality care to its community while remaining financially sustainable.
