It is important for public health practitioners to be competent in the aforementioned
areas of health policy because they need to be proficient in their abilities to
constantly be making sure policies are effective, efficient, and still the best possible
alternative for the issue the policy originally addressed. They need to be able to be
analytical and identify timing when to propose, enact, and modify. Advocating for
certain policies and programs improving health in diverse populations is one of their
priorities because it signifies the thought process of a constantly changing and
evolving system and environment. There should be a plan for evaluation, whether it
be annually or when a change arises, economically or otherwise. These
competencies are important for the healthcare leaders to be and remain fluid and
proactive.
This class has covered such topics and issues relating to the stages of policymaking
and the importance and effectiveness of a continual cycle and the departments,
organizations, and branches involved in the process. I still have awhile to go with
Health Administration but I believe these are core topics that complement the
program. It gives a deeper understanding regarding certain practices and laws.
Newer practitioners who would be needing to gain proficiency in these
competencies could use a variety of techniques and resources. One could even be as
simple as training and attending appropriate seminars. There are 14 states that offer
graduate programs in public health as well, such as the Council on Education for
Public Health or the Association of Teachers of Preventative Medicine.
